It sounds like Lucasfilm is still trying to figure out the movie side of Star Wars, as a report suggests Rey will be returning in a big way.

We’ve known since last year that Daisy Ridley would be returning to Star Wars for Rey’s solo movie, but so far it’s only been one movie. There are plenty of other movies in the works, including one from Taika Waititi (“Thor: Ragnarok”), another from Shawn Levy (“Deadpool vs. Wolverine”) For one, Donald Glover is also working on his Lando solo movie. It was recently reported that X-Men writer Simon Kinberg is developing a new Star Wars trilogy, but reports are divided on whether it will be a continuation of the Skywalker saga or something entirely new. Now, a new report from The Hollywood Reporter claims that the debate over whether the new trilogy will be a sequel is that there is an apparent hope that Ridley will return in some form as Rey.

The Hollywood Reporter notes that Rey is key to the series’ next twist, but since Kinberg’s trilogy is still in early development, that could put it in line with Sharmeen Obeid-Chinoy to direct. Rey’s solo movie clashes. Rey’s movie has a lot of writers involved, so The Hollywood Reporter believes that’s why Lucasfilm might be interested in Rey appearing in the new trilogy. A source told The Hollywood Reporter that Rey is “Star Wars’ most valuable movie asset right now, and in some ways probably the only one.”

Lucasfilm has had a lot of trouble continuing the Star Wars universe on the big screen, launching only TV shows in the years after The Rise of Skywalker, another source told The Hollywood Reporter in an attempt to Continuing George Lucas’ original films was out of the question. It was like “being asked to compose a new New Testament. No one could agree on anything, and there was a lot of speculation about the meaning.”

Still, another source noted, “Star Wars is a nostalgia-based business, and they’ve run out of ways to create nostalgia.” A whole bunch of the series’ most popular characters have either been killed off or their storylines have ended. No longer relevant. There can only be so many prequels made.

One insider said that “making standalone movies or continuing the Skywalker saga in any form is a fundamental question the company faces as it tries to move forward,” so we’ll just have to wait and see if Lucasfilm can pick up the pieces The critically panned The Rise of Skywalker left a lasting impression on the film industry.
