I’ll tell you the truth: my limbs are struggling with electricity. The internet line is glowing as Steam reinstalls my favorite space game, Elite Dangerous. Something big is happening in the virtual Milky Way. And no one knows exactly what it is.
A strange anomaly is moving through the galaxystraight towards Bubble
, which is home to the most important human star systems. Players rotate on social media, excitedly speculating, chasing their theories through the airwaves. And what we do know points to profound changes.
What is the reason for the riot?
With Update 13, a two-year storyline in Elite Dangerous came to an abrupt end. A superweapon designed to destroy the alien Thargoids did virtually the opposite. Instead of turning into space dust, the aliens are no longer mostly passive, but rather aggressive as hell. Formerly powerful Guardian weapons are utterly useless.
Now also appeared a mysterious object in the black void. It is moving towards the central systems of humanity. The shape is reminiscent of the flower-like appearance of the Thargoids.

Some players call it that Far God
and celebrate doomsday parties:

but what exactly the anomaly is, perhaps a Thargoid mothership, a portal to another galaxy, or something else entirely remains unclear. Does the object pose a threat that might burst the whole bubble? Do the people have to flee to distant Colonia? There are numerous wild theories.
How can I see the object? To see the anomaly in Elite Dangerous with your own eyes, head to the Oochorrs UF-J C11-0 system. From there, gaze out at the prominent Barnard’s Loop, a massive red nebula long associated with the Thargoids. You should see the object nearby.

What is officially known?
Big changes are indeed coming to Elite Dangerous with Update 14, which are a direct consequence of the failed annihilation of the Thargoids. After the end of the storyline Azimuth Saga
stands with Aftermath
the next storyline on the agenda.
Details are not known, but senior producer Samantha Marsh from developer Frontier Developments PC Gamer issued a statement promising eventful times:
Heading into Update 14 and Aftermath, the Thargoid threat will escalate on a scale the commanders have never seen. I think everyone can see that bad things are coming. But Aftermath is only going to exacerbate the situation, and we’re very excited to see how everyone will handle it. And it’s safe to say that the galaxy will never be the same again.

Most recently, with Odyssey, Elite Dangerous got the long-awaited ability to exit the spaceship and play on foot:
