Studio Trigger, to whom we owe the excellent anime Cyberpunk Edgerunners, surprised and disappointed with this birthday present from a cult license.
After the masterful adaptation of Cyberpunk 2077 into an anime for Netflix with Cyberpunk Edgerunners, the talented studio Trigger announced that it is working on another cult license: Transformers. It aims to celebrate the 40th anniversary of this emblematic work. Even if the result is a great homage, the thing has disappointed more than one person.
Studio Trigger still delights us, but also disappoints a little
Now known around the world for its exceptional work on Kill La Kill and Cyberpunk Edgerunners, Studio Trigger has earned a lot of street cred. The prospect of seeing it working on Transformers, to mark the cult license’s 40th anniversary, has made more than one mouth water. This was confirmed by a first teaser of excellent quality, in which the famous robots are enlarged by the studio’s characteristic style.
After this first tantalizing appetizer, the final result was released this week. And while Studio Trigger still rewards us with remarkable work, we are a little late with the fruits. Its homage to 40 years of Transformers comes in the form of a much too short video of around 4 minutes. Given the exquisite quality of the whole thing, fans regret that Studio Trigger did not develop a proper anime.
Unfortunately, until proven otherwise, this does not seem to be part of the plans of Studio Trigger, which would be working on further adaptations of CD Projekt RED’s Cyberpunk 2077 universe. But you never know, maybe the talented animation studio will be contacted for a larger appearance around Transformers. Fans of the license and/or the artists behind Cyberpunk Edgerunners would certainly not say no to such an opportunity.
