Tekken 8 is experiencing success after an initial wave of players trying to get online caused widespread server issues. This resulted in many people trying the game experiencing crashes on all platforms.
Update: The issue has been addressed by both Bandai Namco and Tekken 8 director Katsuhiro Harada, who wrote the following on twitter: “We are currently experiencing an error during online matching and viewing due to excessive access to the matchmaking and tournament servers. We are currently working to resolve this issue. Thank you for your patience.”

Harada has since announced that the issue has been fixed on all platforms! It was a bumpy launch, to be sure, but thankfully it didn’t completely take away Tekken 8’s momentum.
It’s worth noting Tekken 8’s current popularity on Steam, with the number of players on Steam reaching a peak of 49,977 last night. “Tekken 7” is the previous game and was a huge success in its own right, with the number of players on Steam reaching a peak of 18,966. That doesn’t even take into account Xbox and PlayStation players – which is worth keeping in mind since consoles have historically been the star platforms for fighting games.
These server issues are a thorny issue for Tekken 8. While you might be tempted to dismiss them as one of the less serious problems your game might encounter, you should remember the power of first impressions and first-day momentum. Thankfully, the game isn’t completely broken, and a fix is on the way, but you have to hope that new players keen to play online don’t get turned off by the experience.
