It turns out that despite being able to play the entire game in single player, The Expendables: Kill the Justice League Always online.
After a long wait and more than one delay, Suicide Squad finally released in May, and PlayStation’s recently released State of Play actually showed off a lot of gameplay. So far, it looks… good, maybe even okay if you like words like “Gear Score,” or terrible if you hate them. Outdated game design aside, Rocksteady’s latest design also has a bright spot: the game is always online, even if you only want to play a single-player game.
If you head over to the game’s FAQ page, you’ll find a series of questions about the game that might help you understand anything the trailer might not have covered well. One thing that the recent trailer definitely didn’t cover was the question listed in the FAQ, “Do I need an internet connection to play Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League?” The official answer to this was, “Yes, to play Suicide Squad Internet connection required: Kill the Justice League alone or via online co-op.”
The reason for that decision isn’t answered in the FAQ, but it’s certainly an annoying question. If I had a nickel for every major four-player co-op game from a well-respected developer that forces you to have an internet connection even though the game is entirely playable in single-player mode, I’d only have two nickels ( looking at you, Redfall), but oddly enough it happened twice.
Suicide Squad seems to be in the odd position of trying to deliver the single-player quality that Rocksteady is known for, while taking advantage of the industry live-service aspect that so many games employ today. We all know how Marvel’s Avengers ends.
In addition to having “Gear Scores,” Suicide Squad will also have a Battle Pass that will only unlock cosmetics unrelated to said Gear Scores. Why a game like this needs a Battle Pass cough (we know why) cough is anyone’s guess, but hey, when the game launches on PC, PS5, and Xbox Series X, you’ll be able to discover for yourself just how intrusive it is/S May 26.
