We’re finally getting our first taste of the Super Mario Bros. movie next month, as the trailer is scheduled to premiere at New York Comic-Con.
The official NYCC Twitter account announced earlier this week, Nintendo and Illumination’s Super Mario Bros. will be unveiled at the convention on October 6th at 4pm EST. It also finalized a release date of April 7, 2023, as it was previously only confirmed for a spring release, having previously been pushed back to this year’s holiday season.
Pairing the announcement is a very simple poster showing the classic question mark block on a black background, offering an elegance that Mario probably doesn’t deserve. No other details about the trailer were provided, and the announcement certainly didn’t mention whether we’ll hear the voice of Mario himself, Chris Pratt.
The Super Mario Bros. movie was first announced in 2018, but it wasn’t until last year that we got an official casting confirmation at the fateful September Direct. Pratt, a not-so-popular actor named Chris, is inexplicably voiced as the second most popular plumber in the world, while Charlie Day (It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia) is announced For Luigi, the world’s most popular plumber.
It has been revealed that Anya Taylor-Joy (Witch) will play Princess Peach, Jack Black (School of Rock) as Bowser, Keegan-Michael Key (Kee & Peele) as Toad, Seth Rogen (Monster Wars) Alien) as Donkey Kong.
Pratt playing Mario caused a lot of concern, in part because Charles Martinet provided such an iconic performance, but also because Pratt was… him. While Pratt insists everything will be fine, calling his own vocal performance “unlike anything you’ve heard in Mario World before,” it’s clearly a bold claim, especially when he’s confronted by Toad Iconic , deafening screams.
