quarry, Supermassive Games’ upcoming narrative horror game will have multiple endings. When we say multiple, well, we mean 186.
Each ending depends on the choices you make with non-playable characters in the game. These endings can be life-or-death as the story will change based on said choices — all contained within a 1,000-page script.
Game director Will Byles discussed the workload of this “math nightmare” in a conversation with IGN. A lot of work is imposed not only on the developers themselves, but also on the game’s actors.
“Writing a branching narrative is a really fun exercise,” Byers told IGN. “We wrote a full, hundred-page script as if it were a movie. We developed our character style, and once we had that, we could start working on how to break it down into a full The 10-hour experience. “Actors are used to a hundred-page script in a feature film, so when we send the script to the actors, they panic because they’re so big. This script is over a thousand pages long. We were shooting about 50 pages a day, which was unheard of. It’s just a crazy shot. But it’s clear that a lot of what they’ve learned is repeated over and over again, just in different branches. “
How these branches will work, is there a size decision in the game. And thanks to clever placement, such as making a decision when there are only a few other characters, more characters will continue to function normally because they don’t know your decision.
Larger choices will “significantly affect the story,” Byles said, and those decisions affect other characters. But there are also many smaller choices that affect the story you’re playing, like relationships. And the outcome of every decision you make, big or small, is announced to you so you know how you’re affecting another person or how it’s affecting the bigger picture.
The Quarry hits theaters June 10, and on the last day of summer camp, the teen counselors at Hackett’s Quarry decided to throw a party to celebrate. Unfortunately for them, bloody locals and “more sinister” things can turn party nights into horror nights.
In the game, you will play as each of nine camp advisors composed of David Arquette (Scream), Ariel Winter (Modern Family), Justin Smith (Jurassic World), Actors such as Brenda Song (Babyface), Lance Henriksen (Alien), Lin Shaye (Nightmare on Elm Street) and more.
The game can also be played online with up to 7 friends, with invited players to watch and vote on key decisions, creating a story shaped by the entire team. Alternatively, you can play together in couch co-op, where each player chooses a camp advisor to control.
It has an adjustable difficulty, and if you’d rather watch the game than play, the movie mode lets you enjoy the game like a movie thriller. All you have to do is decide how you want the story to unfold, relax and enjoy the horror.
Quarry will be available on PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One and Xbox Series X/S.
