Surprise, Zelda: Tear of the Kingdom speedrunner has set a record

For most of us, it’s been less than a full day of playing The Legend of Zelda: Kingdom Tears, and some have even managed to complete a speedrun.

You may not be familiar with Breath of the Wild speedruns, and if you aren’t, you should be, because they’re a work of art. The current world record for the first game is just under 24 minutes, an absurd number given the size of the game. But you know what’s even more ridiculous? In fact, someone managed to beat the game not only on launch day, but also in a speedrun that took just over an hour and a half.

You read that right, someone has managed to speed up the game handily, to a specific time of 1:34:33, an incredibly impressive achievement for a one-day speedrun. As spotted by VGC, this particular run comes from speedrunner gymnast86, who shared their speedrun earlier today – apparently this run is absolutely full of endgame spoilers, so don’t watch it if you don’t want to ruin the ending yourself. Gymnast86 was even kind enough to post a short video showing some of the tricks they used to pull off this feat, but again, spoilers, so keep your wits about you until you finish the game.

Obviously not all of us will be able to get through the level that quickly, and some of us might even need a little help getting through the beginning of the game – which makes perfect sense as the opening is a bit overwhelming! Thankfully, we’ve got a nifty little tips guide for beginners to get you on your way. Maybe they’ll be the start of your own speedrunning journey!
