The horror genre is one of the favorites by Spanish developers, based on the releases of the last decade, with a good number of games that have recreated the survival horror in different ways. But lately they seem to like to reminisce about mechanics of yesteryear based on three classics from the 90s.
Alone in the Dark, Resident Evil Y Silent Hill. Those are the pillars on which some of the works that we have seen recently or that are close to its premiere are based. Also, curiously, in less than two months three have come together out of nowhere and this trend is probably not an anecdote.
We are going to review, chronologically, those that have been most inspired by these classics in the last five years. And all from developers based in Europe.
Vaccine
We traveled until February 21, 2017 to remember the failed Vaccine by Rainy Night Creations, a studio formed by a single person who currently resides in Madrid and is immersed in the development of the adventure Innocence Island.
Under an aesthetic that went back to the legendary 1996 Resident Evil, Vaccine stood out for the originality of his approachWe had 30 minutes to find a vaccine for our infected partner inside a mansion whose rooms were generated in a completely random way.
His problem was that everything else leaked, being an experience weighed down by that repetitive pattern of the rooms. At least it came out at a very cheap price (less than 10 dollars) in PS4, Steam, Switch, Wii U y Xbox One.
Injection π23
Quite more recent (June 4, 2019) is the game from Abramelin Games, Injection π23 – No name, no number. A horror adventure set in a real town in Malaga. Yes, the modest studio is Malaga, as is logical.
Here his main influence is Silent Hill, both by how it plays with the lonely mind of the protagonist, tormented by his own condition as a human being, as by the creatures of designs taken from our worst nightmares.
His graphic appearance was also old, mixing his style of play with exploration and puzzle solving. Its price was 9,99 dollars on PS4, costing a bit more on Steam. He had the impulse of PlayStation Talents.
Song of Horror
Coinciding with last Halloween, the Madrid Protocol Games surprised us with their sliced tribute towards classics of yesteryear with Song of Horror. Today, without going any further, its fourth and penultimate episode, “The Last Concert”, is put on sale, inspired by the disturbing Amnesia: The Dark Descent.
In its previous chapters there were many traces of Alone in the Dark, Clock Tower, Silent Hill it is included Obscure, in “Following the trail”, being an adventure that stands out mainly for the permanent death of the protagonists. This inevitably causes a tension in the player and knowing that “The Presence” will react to our style of play so that no two appearances are the same.
In its debut it seemed to us a slightly remarkable launch, especially for the originality of its approach, since the control of the characters is something that could be improved and penalizes too much with certain actions of “The Presence”. Song of Horror: Episode 4 – The last concert will dramatically increase in duration as it approaches 8 hours of play. The entire season costs 21,99 dollars on Steam (or 7.99 dollars per episode) and is expected for PS4 and Xbox One this year.
Fear the Dark Unknown
From Valencia comes to us Fear the Dark Unknown, one of the last releases that occurred in 2019 (December 2), temporarily exclusively for Steam, since its adaptation to consoles is on the way in mid-2020.
Set in the Beresford mansion, this work by Dreamlight Games Studio presents us with a 200 year journey (yes, in different times of said mansion because of a curse) where James and Chloe Sullivan will face the final test of their lives. The suffering of a father. The despair of a daughter. Two different styles of play, each one more terrifying and with strong inspiration in the survival horror of the nineties, including Resident Evilof course.
The adventure has good intentions and its setting convinces, but at times it gives the feeling of still being a beta because of bugs that prevent progress in your story (it is not short, be careful: 30 hours) or in the improvement that is the transition of the camera shots. Its price is 24,95 dollars.
Dawn of Fear
Finally, from Alicante we will have for sale soon Dawn of Fear, from the Brok3nSite study. Specifically, the February 3rd and via PlayStation Store for PS4. It is, in fact, another work supported by the initiative PlayStation Talents.
Halfway between Resident Evil and Silent Hill, we are facing another survival horror which bets on fixed cameras, puzzles and dosing the few resources we have at our disposal (yes, there will be a shortage of ammunition) to survive when danger arises. Why the zombies will not be lacking either and other beings.
Dawn of Fear he flirts, in turn, with the paranormal and with creatures called “reapers”, so we have more than enough reasons to share the trauma of the protagonist (Álex) back to his native home because of seeing how his stepmother is He went on to the arts of necromancy. Your reservation is not active.
