Although we haven’t got an official one yet Nintendo Switch 2 Recent reports suggest it has been delayed beyond 2024, with the latest news claiming this is due to hardware shortage concerns.
Earlier this month, reports emerged that the yet-to-be-confirmed Switch 2 had been delayed internally, pushing it back to 2024 and into the first quarter of 2025. At the time, it was believed that part of the reason for the delay was to ensure that subsequent console releases would have a strong launch lineup with as many games as possible. Now, a new report from Japanese news outlet Nikkei (paywall, thanks to VGC) gives us a little more insight into the delay. According to Nikkei, “the priority is to secure initial inventory of subsequent consoles and the software lineup at launch,” i.e. Nintendo wants to make sure it actually has enough consoles for sale to avoid scalpers selling them off Resale. The prices are ridiculous.

What is worrisome is that PlayStation and Xbox’s PS5 and Series X/S faced serious supply problems almost two years before they were launched, especially scalpers selling PS5 at prices much higher than the retail price. It’s worth noting, though, that while the Nikkei report says Nintendo is aiming to release the Switch 2 in March, or whatever it ends up being called, the console could still be delayed further depending on manufacturing , and what software is ready for release. That means, don’t expect to have a new console in your hands for more than a year – and keep your cool when all those rumors about purported straights and reveals don’t pan out as reported.
Nikkei also confirmed previous reports that the Switch 2 will once again be a hybrid home/portable console, and that it will also have a larger screen than the original’s 6.2-inch screen. She said it’s all his word for now, so wait a little longer until we get the full reveal.
