Nintendo released its 2021 financial report for the year ended March 31, 2022.
According to the data, it was down year-on-year and net profit was slightly flat.
Nintendo noted a 3.6% year-over-year decline in its sales, even as its dedicated video game platform brought in 1.64 trillion yen ($12.3 billion). This figure includes accessories, hardware and software, the latter also including downloadable versions of packaged software, download-only software, additional content and Nintendo Switch Online.
Mobile and IP-related revenue (smart device content and royalty revenue) brought in 53.3 billion yen ($408.8 million), down 6.5% year over year.
Overall, Nintendo reported full-year sales of 1.7 trillion yen ($13.1 billion), down 3.6 percent from a year earlier. By region, 43.5% of sales came from the Americas, 25% from Europe, 21.2% from Japan and 10.35% from other regions.
The annual hardware sales were 23.06 million units, down 20% year-on-year. Switch sold 13.56 million units (-33.3% year-on-year), Nintendo Switch OLED models sold 5.8 million units, and Nintendo Switch Lite sold 8.5 million units, down 56.5%.
Despite the decline, the figure is the highest fiscal year since the launch of the Nintendo Switch, with annual game users now exceeding 100 million
Software moved 235 million units, a year-on-year increase of 1.8%. Newer games like Pokemon Brilliant Diamond/Shining Pearl and Pokemon Legends: Arceus sold 14.65 million and 12.64 million units, respectively. During this period, Mario Kart 8 Deluxe continued to operate by moving 9.94 million units.
In terms of sales, the Switch is Nintendo’s best-selling home console, with 107.65 million units sold worldwide to date. In terms of software, 822.2 million consoles have been sold.
Among first-party IPs, Mario Kart 8 Deluxe remains the best-selling Switch game with 45.33 million units sold, followed by Animal Crossing: New Horizons with 38.64 million units sold, and Super Smash Bros. Ultimate with 28.17 million units sold, The Legend of Zelda: Breath of Red Dead Redemption has now sold 26.55 million units, while Pokemon Sword/Shield has now sold 24.27 million units.
The Switch now has 39 million top-selling games, 26 of which are first-party and 13 third-party.
