The promising new edition of the classic System Shock has been delayed several times and for a long time – and this year it doesn’t seem to be a release anymore. After all, there is probably a time window for the publication.
Nightdive Studios has been working on a remake of the classic System Shock for many years, which started as a Kickstarter project in 2016. At that time, an expected release in 2017 was assumed, but as is well known, nothing has come of it to this day. After several postponements, we now have to bury hopes of a release in 2022.
Although there is no explicit official announcement, the product page on Steam has been updated. After all, a specific release period is now mentioned there, which does not just look like a placeholder: March 2023.
Most recently, the System Shock Remake was actually expected for 2022 – a circumstance that had become increasingly unlikely given the year was drawing to a close. It remains to be hoped that the new information on Steam will have a foothold and that the makers will really have finished the fundamentally promising project by then.
The remake aims to update the original game from 1994 from the ground up and bring it up to date with the latest technology. Not only the graphics are raised to a brand new HD level, the control and interface as well as the audio background are also revised. The original voice of SHODAN, one of the most iconic antagonists in gaming history, is said to be part of the game.
