Kimetsu No Yaiba’s Tanjiro Kamado has become a true Demon Slayer. He has faced many Demons, including Upper Moons, and has fought alongside Pillars of the Demon Slayer Corps. This has allowed him to accumulate a lot of experience. However, his combat prowess is not his most distinctive feature.
First and foremost, Tanjiro is a kind and very empathetic character, so much so that we’ve seen him feel sorry for some of the demons who have tried to kill him. Sakonji Urokodaki himself pointed out that his benevolence could be a problem when it comes to killing demons. This is not only a problem for some characters, but for many people who don’t quite like the character… including his creator.
Koyoharu Gotouge said that Tanjiro is “too normal” and that he originally had very dark plans. Both the character and the manga (and the anime by extension) were going to have a much darker, violent and humorless tone. And of course, the original designs were in line with this idea.
It’s important to distinguish between the images. On the left you can see the original concepts of Nezuko and Tanjiro without scars or earrings (two distinctive elements), and on the right you can see Koyoharu Gotouge’s idea for the character. This is Kagarigari o Kisatsu no Nagare, a previous story that was never serialized and that followed the style he wanted for Kimetsu No Yaiba: revenge, violence and crudeness.
Although the character we see on the right is not Tanjiro, we can say that it is a good approximation of what the final design would have been like, had the editor not intervened with some suggestions to make the manga more attractive in order to make it into a series. Now we know that it was a great success.
