Link has a whole new set of abilities in The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom, but many people seem to have forgotten that Ascend exists.
I don’t think I can count the number of times I’ve accidentally pressed the D pad trying to select one of my abilities in Tears of the Kingdom. For those of you starting out in the sequel, you may not realize that this is how you select the Sheikah Slate ability in Breath of the Wild, not the L button in Tears of the Kingdom. Muscle memory obviously comes into play here, and I think for me it’s also made me forget about the powers I have, especially Ascension – and it seems like a lot of other players keep forgetting it too.
On the Zelda subreddit, a user started a thread called “Anyone [else] Forget about the existence of ascension ability[s]’, out of 369 comments, many seemed to agree. “Yeah, the first few hours were spent underground, not that useful there,” wrote one user. “Then I went to check a well , I really thought I couldn’t get out. “This one was very relevant to me – I literally used a rock that I was lifting with the Ultrahand, then used the Recall to climb out of the well, completely forgetting that I could climb up there.
Another talked about its use against Battle Talus, the new form of those big rock dudes equipped with platforms and Bokoblins. “I had an epiphany and when it finally clicked a bubble popped in my head that I could use Ascend to climb up Battle Talus to hit its rocks,” the user wrote. “I was trying to climb that Stupid thing gets leaned, but can’t get over the log. Go up. Ugh!”
Others in the thread shared that they also forget about Recall a lot, and likewise, I do too, but now I’ll use it to quickly save things I drop from Sky Island. Stuff like this really shows you how Recall is the strongest ability in Tears of Kingdoms in the game. Although it’s cool that Ascend is basically cheating (the devs admit they like to do it).
