In spring 2023, “Ted Lasso” will return to Apple TV+ for a third season. Since the beginning of comedy, the series has only been on the up and has since become a real fan favorite. With the following 10 Fun Facts we want to shorten the wait until our darlings return from AFC Richmond and give you a few “aha” moments.
1. “Ted Lasso” started out as a commercial
Before “Ted Lasso” made it into the Apple TV+ program, there was already an advertisement for US broadcaster NBC in 2012 that followed the same premise. The clip was intended to promote the English Premier League on NBC Sports programming.
However, when Sudeikis’ character was so well received by viewers that NBC ran another commercial, Sudeikis decided to team up with Brendan Hunt to develop a possible “Ted Lasso” series, and the rest was history. Watch the NBC commercial that got it all rolling here:
2. “Ted Lasso” broke all Emmy records
From the start of the comedy, the series has turned out to be a real hit. That’s why it has rained plenty of awards and distinctions so far. “Ted Lasso” has reached its peak so far at the 73rd Emmy Awards. Here the series was able to garner a total of 20 nominations. She overtook the musical series “Glee”, which previously held the record.
3. “Ted Lasso” star Brett Goldstein was supposed to play a very different role
It’s hard to imagine, but actor Brett Goldstein wasn’t actually cut out to play grumpy AFC captain Roy Kent. Goldstein was originally hired as a writer on the series.
However, Goldstein became so involved with the development of Kent’s role that he grew more comfortable with the idea of playing the character himself. So he finally handed in his audition tape on his last day at work and the risk paid off.
4. The Mumford & Sons frontman composes the music for ‘Ted Lasso’
Marcus Mumford, the frontman of British folk rock band Mumford & Sons, is good friends with Sudeikis. That’s why Sudeikis approached the musician at the beginning of the production work on the series and asked him if he and his band might not compose music for the series. Together with the musician Tom Howe, Mumford has now written and recorded the entire background music for the series.
5. Ted’s viral dance was made famous on Saturday Night Live
Ted Lasso is known for celebrating his team’s victory with a joyous and highly entertaining dance. However, this one gained notoriety even before the series and is an integral part of Jason Sudeikis’ career. He first used it in the sketch “What Up With That?” performed on the US show “Saturday Night Live”. Here you can see it:
6. A former “Scrubs” star directed one episode
The Apple TV+ series is attracting some big names in the series and film business – and not just in front of the camera. For example, former “Scrubs” star Zach Braff directed the second episode (“Biscuits”) in the first season.
7. Are Ted Lasso’s cookies really that delicious?
Ted likes to hand out his homemade cookies on the show. Now, though, Hannah Waddingham, who plays club owner Rebecca Welton, has hinted that the tempting-looking pastry isn’t actually all that delicious. She even joked that eating the cookies was the “hardest acting job of her life.”
8. Nick Mohammed and Phil Dunster both wanted to play Higgins
In the meantime, you can’t really imagine any other actor than Jeremy Swift in the role of Leslie Higgins, but several actors wanted the role. Among others, the “Ted Lasso” actors Nick Mohammed (Coach Nate) and Phil Dunster (Jamie Tartt) had applied for the character.
9. Hannah Waddingham’s legendary “Frozen” performance almost didn’t happen
In the episode “Make Rebecca Great Again” Hannah Waddingham gives us a great performance of the “Frozen” song “Let it Go”. However, we almost didn’t get to see this legendary performance. In order to be allowed to use the song in the series, permission had to be obtained from Disney.
This request was promptly denied as Disney was probably afraid that their song could be put in a bad light. However, when series creators sent a recording of Waddingham to Disney, it was finally approved to air and we can now see the scene as it was originally intended.
10. The “Ted Lasso” karaoke episode is based on a true story
The karaoke episode is a real highlight of “Ted Lasso” for many fans. In fact, Sudeikis was inspired by real football events. The German Liverpool coach Jürgen Klopp invited his entire team to a karaoke evening and made football history. Sudeikis liked this so much that he eventually adopted the idea for the series.
