Funcom has announced that Tencent plans to acquire all shares of Norwegian game developers.
Tencent is a shareholder of Riot Games, Epic, Supercell, Ubisoft, Paradox and Frontier, and currently owns nearly 29% of Funcom. Conan's exile developers expressed "enthusiasm" about the company's acquisition intent.
Funcas CEO Rui Casais said: "We have a good relationship with Tencent, the largest shareholder so far, and we are very excited about this opportunity." "We will continue to develop great games that people around the world will play, and we I believe Tencent's support will take Funcom to a new level. As a leading company in the gaming field, Tencent will provide Funcom with operational leverage and insights with its extensive knowledge. "
Funcom said it has no plans to change the company's structure after the planned acquisition. As it will continue to support its long-running online games Conan Exile, Secret World Legends, Conan Era, and Anarchy Online, it will remain independent.
In addition to various projects, the studio is currently developing an open world multiplayer survival game based on Dune. Through Tencent's acquisition, Funcom intends to "improve gaming ambitions", awaiting board approval, and resources "allocated from other plans and possibly more financing."
Funcom signed an agreement with Legendary Studios last February to develop games based on the Dune franchise as part of a six-year license agreement. The deal covers at least three games on PCs and consoles.
