Terminator: Resistance has nothing to do with the upcoming movie Terminator: Dark Fate. Instead, the shooter tells its own story, which plays about 30 years after Judgment Day from Terminator 2. In the guise of resistance fighter Jacob Rivers, you once again try to end the war against Skynet for good.
Pistols, assault rifles, MPs and plasma jars shoot metal crawlers, automatic cannons, flying drones and of course lots of Terminator to junk. The remnants of the enemies contain items such as ammunition and resources that can be used to craft medipacks, grenades, and other helpful items at workbenches. Also collected are experience points that allow you to unlock new abilities. Soldier Rivers gets more in, increases inventory or can use better weapons. Later, upgrades are added that increase the firepower, stability and magazine size of the weapons.

The game areas are laid out a bit larger, so often lead several ways to the current destination. In addition, search and collection tasks for various members of the resistance can be done. Equally optional is the destruction of Skynet factories located in some areas. This brings in additional experience, resources and money invested in shelter, for example, in new weapons.

Developer Teyon cobbled together a game out of these standard ingredients, which is outdated both technically and playfully. When testing on the Xbox One it made little difference in terms of frame rate, whether we played on the X or S variant: it almost always jerky. Even the possibility of limiting the frame rate to 30 frames per second brought only a slight improvement. Greater is the distance in the resolution: The Xbox One X brings a mostly sharp 4K image on the screen. By contrast, it lacks on the Xbox One S to fine drawing and sharpness. In general, a filter is used, which trims the optics on grainy and dirty. This worsens the slightly blurry image on the S console in addition. There is no HDR support.
Much heavier than the staid technology, however, weighs the playful boredom. At the latest with a plasma weapon, the title degenerates into a dumb shooting gallery in which even the allegedly dangerous killer cyborgs fall like flies. In addition, neither enemy nor level design make any attempt to be diversified. In addition to the open missions, there are strictly scripted procedures that only continue when NPC or AI opponents allow it. In some places we had to take several screen deaths because we did not behave as the game intended.
Only in the story there are small bright spots, because the plot is noticeably hard to build an atmosphere in the style of the film series. Different answers in the dialogues also have a certain influence on the course and outcome of the story. But unfortunately the hakeligen animations and lifeless faces of the characters suffocate any mood in the bud. Apart from the cool Terminator theme and proper English speakers, the soundscape is modest: The action lacks pressure, dynamics and spaciousness. In addition, there were multiple short sound misfires when playing on the Xbox One S.
