News culture Terminator Zero is off to a great start on Netflix. This sci-fi anime is as good as Cyberpunk Edgerunners and Arcane!
Netflix seems to have a new bombshell when it comes to animation. Terminator Zero was just released by the streaming giant and the reviews have been very positive.
We are back from vacation and that is a good thing because Netflix has just hosted an animated series that makes you want to stay at home. It is about Terminator Zero, the first season of which has been available since August 29, 2024. As the name suggests, it is taken from the famous science fiction universe created in 1984 by James Cameron (and played by Schwarzenegger) with “Terminator”. And as the name suggests, it’s not about John or Sarah Connor, all that… Welcome to 1997 Japan, while a computer scientist tries to compete with the famous AI SkyNet (the famous antagonist of the saga). A really bad idea: a robot is sent from the future to eliminate him.

A great start
On the other hand, the anime itself seems to be brilliant if we refer to its rating at Rotten Tomatoes: At the time of writing these lines Terminator Zero shows a flawless “100%” on the reference page. (based on 15 reviews). A small feat that currently puts it on the same level as Arcane and Cyberpunk Edgerunners on Rotten Tomatoes – two other Netflix animated series that received great acclaim upon their respective releases in 2021 and then 2022. We’ll see if the series produced by IG Production | Skydance will reach the top 10 most popular series on the platform.
Not so unanimous feedback
And what do these critics think? The Hollywood Reporter calls it a “solid framework” that rivals the “best parts of the franchise.” “Inverse” conjures up “heartbreaking” characters and “innovative action.” Discussing Film, for its part, goes full throttle:
Terminator Zero is not only the best thing the franchise has released in years, but also one of Netflix’s most stylish original anime ever
So on the French side? For the moment, no media rating is yet displayed on the Allociné website (that of the public is, however, at 2.7/5), which does not prevent us from sharing some trends with you: On our side, at JV, we welcomed “a little SF nugget ” not to be missed under any circumstances… Screen Large points to the first 8 episodes, which “maybe want to tell a little too much”, but which have the value “Make the chronological confusion of the saga a topic in itself”. In short, if you want to form an opinion, you know where this is going. Season 2 is not confirmed yet!
