Terminator Zero, written by Batman II’s Mattson Tomlin, looks pretty good. But at the same time, it feels like the series just can’t break away from its basic premise, and the latest trailer for the anime series is doubling down on what’s been working so well.
Tomlin has spent at least a few years promising a fresh take on the series, and after multiple direct teasers that were cool enough to surprise us, it’s becoming increasingly clear that the series might need a complete reboot after a hiatus.

Mind you, I thought Terminator: Dark Fate (2019) was actually pretty daring and actually pretty good, as it tried to set up a whole new conflict from the get-go, even though it rehashed much of the Terminator 2 formula we all knew and loved. James Cameron was well aware that the IP had run out of steam after too many T2 sequels failed to live up to expectations, but he knew something had to give in order to usher the sci-fi franchise into a new era. While the reviews were positive enough, the box office was not great, mainly because audiences had grown tired of it after so many subpar sequels, so the series’ big-screen future was over. dark again.
Now, Terminator Zero has moved away from the Connor family and set in Japan, but we’re still getting a new Terminator movie in which a robot killer from the future is hunting down an ordinary person whose actions may be crucial to thwarting Skynet’s plans to destroy the world. Once you start to consider that the basic premise is almost the same and Skynet is part of the plot, Terminator Zero may actually be a more conservative film than Dark Fate, which replaced Judgment Day caused by Skynet with a completely different artificial intelligence threat, making us think that humanity may just be eaten by the universe in the Terminator universe. But hey, the “tech-noir” vibe is back!
Regardless, I think Terminator Zero looks good regardless. While some CG botches ruin otherwise great scenes, the Production IG touch is evident throughout the trailer, and Masashi Kudã’s involvement adds weight to the entire project. Additionally, the cast includes talented actors like Timothy Olyphant, André Holland, Sonoya Mizuno, and Ann Dowd, suggesting this isn’t a cheap film. But does this take the series into uncharted territory? Probably not. Terminator Zero will be released on Netflix on August 29, Judgment Day.
Perhaps Terminator 2019 (2009) marks the most interesting path forward (although not a very good one). Let’s wait and see how a future war with Skynet or the Legion will unfold.
