Genetic engineering as a solution for agriculture?
am 19.02.2024 one 06:30 Clock
For “Terra Xplore”, qualified biologist and science journalist Jasmina Neudecker discovers the viewers’ world in her own special way. With curiosity and scientific depth, she finds answers that surprise and inspire. The special thing about the format is that it conveys science in an exciting and emotional way. We need sustainable agriculture that can feed more and more people despite the climate crisis. Could genetic engineering be the solution here? Researchers definitely see it that way. However, 80 percent of Germans reject genetic engineering in agriculture, which is primarily the result of the questionable handling of the technology by chemical companies in the 1990s. This could change in the future with the development of the CRISPR-Cas9 gene scissors. At the Leibniz Institute for Plant Genetics and Crop Plant Research, for example, research is being carried out into using these genetic scissors to make plants more robust and therefore more resilient – with success. So does modern genetic engineering bring us into a more sustainable future? Jasmina Neudecker wants to investigate this question by looking over the shoulders of those who deal with it every day.

Is evil in you too?
am 20.02.2024 one 06:20 Clock
Is there evil in each of us? What do “good” and “evil” actually mean from a scientific perspective? For “Terra Xplore,” biologist Jasmina Neudecker gets to the bottom of these questions. What qualities in us make us more on the good side or the evil side? What is innate and what is due to our environment? Jasmina Neudecker talks about this with the criminal psychologist Lydia Benecke and a convicted sex offender. “Terra Xplore” also critically classifies the Stanford Prison Experiment and puts the research results from the 1970s in the right light. In this experiment, study leader Dr. In 1971, Philip Zimbardo made a total of twelve young men into guards and twelve into inmates of a fake prison – both at random. The experiment was supposed to last two weeks. But it had to be stopped after just six days because the situation escalated and abuse occurred. The conclusion that Zimbardo drew from this is: When people have the opportunity, the evil in them gains the upper hand. “Terra Xplore” investigates this and shows the mechanisms underlying the Stanford Prison Experiment in its own psychologically supervised and ethically justifiable social experiment.
