- Warning: Follow the spoilers for episode 2 of “The Witcher” season 2!
- Witcher Eskel dies in the 2nd episode in a controversial way.
- Book readers and fans were shocked by the surprising death, which was reinvented for the Netflix series.
- Originally, the whole thing was planned very differently, as you can find out here.
Little about the 2nd season of “The Witcher” upsets fans of books and games like the death of the popular witcher Eskel (Basil Eidenbenz). Neither in the novel nor in the games does the witcher bless the temporal. Eskel’s demise caused a lot of resentment among fans of the Witcher universe – a small controversy surrounding Stafel 2 was born.
The creator of “The Witcher” has now justified her decision to let Eskel jump over the blade. In the YouTube special “The Witcher: Unlocked“explains Lauren S. Hissrich that in said episode someone had to die. A monster should therefore enter the witcher fortress Kaer Morhen and be in a connection with Ciri (Freya Allan).
The Witcher showrunner continues: “Both Geralt, Vesemir and the brothers recognize that something is fundamentally changing because they brought this girl to their fortress.”
Of course, these considerations make perfect sense. In fact, following Eskel’s death, Geralt also left Kaer Morhen to investigate the new occurrence of the monsters. He later realizes that this is actually related to Ciri’s chaos magic – and even comes up with a new theory about the conjunction of the spheres.
But why does Eskel of all people have to die?
But it could be argued that the popular witcher Eskel didn’t have to bless the temporal right away. And so it was originally not planned in the 2nd season of “The Witcher”. Originally, Lauren S. Hissrich further reveals, a completely new witcher figure, previously unknown to fans, was to be introduced, the would have had the name “John”.
But would the death of a character who had never known either book readers or gamers come as a surprise? Probably not.
In the second episode of the second “The Witcher” season, a character ultimately had to die to whom both the other characters as well as the fans and viewers of the Netflix show have a connection. Hissricht emphasizes that “[Eskels] Death changed everything for Geralt. “This is the only reason why the witcher goes in search of answers – otherwise not only would Ciri’s safety be threatened, but also that of his other brothers and wizards at the Wolf School.
