When Elon Musk is up to mischief on Twitter, big promises about his future plans often come out. This is also the case this time, where he plans to bring not only individual games, but even your entire game library from Steam to Tesla cars.
Musk tweeted this in response to IGN Editor-in-Chief Ryan McCaffrey asking when Cyberpunk 2077 will be ported to the new Model S and X:

McCaffrey is probably targeting the S and X models here, since the latest versions of these models have quite a bit of computing power. A graphics chip from AMD with the RDNA 2 architecture is installed in newer Teslas.
This is the same architecture that AMD’s current graphics cards use. More specifically, this is supposed to be the Navi 23 chip, which is the weakest chip in the architecture. According to Tesla, however, it still has up to 10 teraflops of computing power.
How realistic is porting the Steam library to the Tesla?
We already know that games that require relatively little computing power run in the Telsa. For example, you can play Stardew Valley, Cuphead or Beach Buggy Racing 2 in the electric car. However, demanding AAA games such as Cyberpunk 2077 pose a completely different challenge for the hardware (and its cooling), apart from detours such as cloud gaming via Google Stadia.
A large porting of the Steam library is theoretically possible. That shows us Valve’s newest handheld, the Steam Deck. Both the Tesla’s software and the Steam Deck’s operating system are based on Linux. The Steam Deck ports the Windows versions of the games to its own Linux-based system with a compatibility layer called Proton.
As a result, many (although by no means all) Steam games run on the Steam Deck without any adjustments by the developers. Tesla could do the same with its own electric car. This is also suggested by IGN’s Ryan McCaffrey:

So the idea is not completely out of thin air. However, the implementation may not be as easy as it might first appear. So it may be a long time before we see Steam games in Teslas.
There is also the question of security here. In previous versions, Telsa had allowed games to be launched while driving, which prompted traffic safety to launch an investigation. This is no longer possible. While you are charging the car or for the children in the back seat, games in the car could make sense.
Films can also bridge long waiting times in the car. Elon Musk is also involved in Tom Crusie’s spectacular cinema project, some of which is actually to be shot in space. You can find the first information about this in the following article, but in the meantime the shooting has started postponed to 2023.

What do you think? Would you like access to your Steam library right in your car? Possibly also with regard to fully autonomous cars in the future. Please let us know.
