TEST of the Trust GXT 488 gaming headset: The headset without helmet

gaming, GXT, headset, helmet, Test, Trust

At Trust there is everything and for all budgets. Even the lightest, the image of the GXT 488 headset which is intended to be the mid-range of the Dutch brand. That said, mid-range doesn't have to mean poor quality and that's what you need to check once you've got the 488 on your ears.

If prices at Trust are generally pulled down, there is a very wide range of products under the seal of the brand. Let's get things straight with this helmet; it probably represents the low standard of what can be found on the market.

Better than Wish

Well, ok, it's probably not difficult, but the first advantage when going to a brand that has a storefront is thatwe can at least count on a quality superior to the horrors of what the Chinese site can offer. Suddenly, when you unpack this helmet, the profusion of plastic is a little less shocking and the mixture between a design of Russian submarine and low quality plastics does not make you vomit. Officially dubbed by Sony, it is in the colors of the PS4 with three aesthetic versions (black or blue and gray camo).

Let us attach however to the qualities of the machine. Its rigidity gives it a certain robustness, as long as we accept a tight enough consequence (difficult to bear if you have glasses), partly absorbed by thick pads on a leatherette keeping (very) warm. In return sound insulation is correct. The adjustment of the headband is made on a dozen notches, with a metal reinforcement to prevent everything from dropping in two hours of play.

The whole is mastoc, with a remote control whose finesse is straight out of the 70s (it is standard). An adjustment wheel for the sound level, a mute switch and that's it. On the other hand, you will feel it weigh at the end of a twenty meter wire.

A flat sound

Once plugged in mini jack, no surprise. The sound is flat and the difference is very clearly heard compared to the competition, even in the low / mid range. Any lack of depth and dynamism despite the 50mm speakers. On the other hand, the level is good, the DAC spits enough so that you do not need to mount the bottom amplifier in order to hear something.

The microphone is adjustable via a flexible rod and has a small book windscreen at first (a nice gesture for this range). But you may want to remove it, because the sound heard by your comrades turns out to be quite muffled. Not enough, however, so that we do not understand what you are saying, and finally, that is all that we ask in part. Do not however plan to broadcast streams or videos with clear sound. Also know how to control your environment, there is no system for reducing ambient noise.

This table does not seem very bright and yet, the GXT 488 occupies its niche correctly. For a little less than 40 €, it does not promise you the moon, but represents a first price in relation to the services. Above all, you are guaranteed to have real after-sales service, unlike all low-end helmets noname circulating.

THE ENTRY OF RANGE AT TRUST

The GXT 488 has a pattern that is not matched by its plumage. Its appearance at first does not envy much more expensive helmets. But once in hand, the finishes and the lack of finesse of the whole is obvious. But we are not necessarily going to ask a Twingo to have the comfort level of a Rolls-Royce. So the 488 will do the trick for occasional or second-line use without emptying the wallet.

WE LIKE: WE DON'T LIKE:
  • Delivering a windscreen with the microphone.
  • The price.
  • An apparent robustness.
  • Coarse finishes.
  • The truly massive remote control module.
  • The level of tightness and comfort.
