strengths, weaknesses

Call of Duty Modern Warfare 2 stands out in several ways in the series: On the one hand, after about two weeks, it can be the fastest selling CoD boast. On the other hand, missing features and problems at launch caused disappointed reactions in the Steam reviews. We wanted to know from you how you like the shooter at the release. The answers to our survey are quite varied.

By the way, you can now read about our opinion on Modern Warfare 2 in our detailed test:

What a strange Call of Duty

That’s how you voted

At the time of writing this article, nearly 4,000 of our readers have voted on our poll. A majority of you like Modern Warfare 2 a lot (30 percent) or really a lot (22 percent). But there are also many critical voices: 17 percent of you answered It’s going ok and probably have clear criticism to express.

The answers to our survey were quite varied, but a large majority like the shooter.

Some of you are also quite dissatisfied and state that you don’t like the shooter that much (7 percent) or not at all (6 percent). A total of 18 percent of the participating GameStar readers have not yet tried the game.

Good shooter, but with problems?

In the comments, some of you will also state why you have chosen your respective answer. The conviction has been expressed several times that a good shooter is hidden here, but that was partly buried under launch problems. For example, Shemyaza writes:

Most of the maps are good, the modes are good, and the weapons feel good too. So after the disappointing Vanguard, I really enjoy Modern Warfare 2 again. There are still various bugs and some crashes (especially when playing with friends), but nothing that shouldn’t be fixed with patches in the next few weeks. Could the launch have gone better? Definitive. But I don’t let that spoil my fun.

gertthedevil is also quite satisfied, but he is annoyed by many other missing features such as the hardcore mode:

Things are pretty stable for me. […] Otherwise, I find the gunplay and the progression system of weapons and camos very successful. So far I like the maps very much. Just think it’s a shame that the museum map [..] is not in rotation. Otherwise the hardcore mode is missing. Something like that should be there at the beginning. So far though: great game. I’m looking forward to Season 1 and Warzone 2.

Incidentally, the hardcore mode should be delivered with the start of Season 1 in mid-November, but it is still unclear whether the missing museum map will return. On the other hand, tomato observer, who only bought the game because of the campaign, has no problems waiting for features:

I really enjoyed the campaign. I don’t care about the rest. Next part please. 🙂

We also liked the campaign in the test quite well, except for one mission that cost a lot of nerves:

balancing and matchmaking

For some of you, however, something other than missing features causes more trouble, namely the skill-based matchmaking and the aim assistance for console players, which many consider too strong. Wari expresses this concern as follows:

In itself, the game mechanics are awesome, but SBMM and Aimassist of the controller players spoil the entire fun of the game. For me, every game is one single and unbearable sweat party. No matter how bad I play, the rounds are always the same. The opponents are 99% controller players who hop or quickscope through the map. It’s just a shame that a game that actually has a super good foundation becomes practically unplayable on the PC because of something like that.

Even outside of our survey, gamers keep raising concerns that console gamers currently have too much of an advantage over PC gamers. Many of our readers would therefore also wish that crossplay between PC and consoles could be switched off in the future.

By the way, if you have general problems with aiming, then take a look at our guide:

Another circumstance that caused discussions in the open beta is the Time to Kill. Even among our readers, some are of the opinion that opponents (and you too) in Modern Warfare 2 fall out of their shoes far too quickly. Cyon, who sees the game as a whole quite negatively, describes why this is a problem:

[…] And if your weapons shoot a little faster or do more damage, you win. Aim minor, reaction to fire rarely possible. Killstreak helicopter extremely powerful, since one shot is dead, but three rockets have to go up first so that the flares are gone. Otherwise everything is the same: 50 percent of the players are only out for kills and jump around quickly scoping. Or camp somewhere.

All in all, however, the participants in our survey still seem to view the shooter quite benevolently, even if there is agreement that a lot still needs to be changed and improved. Some of you probably had to endure crashes and other technical problems during the launch, some of which have now been solved.

What do you think of Modern Warfare 2 now? Would you answer the poll differently a week later? Or did you leave the shooter disappointed? Write your opinion in the comments!
