When permanently deleted photos, some from 2010, suddenly reappear for no apparent reason, it can be a nasty surprise. Especially if the device changes hands.

This is exactly what became public a few days ago, we reported.

The latest update to iOS 17.5.1 is now supposed to fix this problem and finally send your photos into the digital abyss.

Installing the update is therefore more than advisable to prevent this rare error. The release notes say the following:

»This update contains important bug fixes and resolves an issue where photos with corrupted data appear in the Photos library even though they have already been deleted«

iOS 17.5.1 and iPadOS 17.5.1 – how to install the update

The update is now available for all compatible iPhones and iPads. To download and install iOS 17.5.1 or iPadOS 17.5.1, proceed as follows

  1. Opens Settings on the iPhone/iPad.
  2. Now select “General” and then “Software update”. The device checks for updates. As soon as the latest version appears, select “Update now”.

Apple is (still) silent on this topic

How come? That will only become apparent when and if Apple comments on it.

The bug caused uncertainty on the Internet. After all, many people assume that deleted data on a device is actually permanently deleted and will not appear again – although, strictly speaking, data is only deleted when it is overwritten.

That’s how it happened, according to one Reddit users even suggested that photos appeared on an iPad that had long since been sold and had therefore changed hands. A sometimes major data protection problem, this should actually be the case.

Have you been affected by this rare bug or have you not been able to see any photos in your albums that no longer belong there? If so, how did you react to it? How do you ensure that your deleted data can no longer be recovered? Feel free to write it to us in the comments below!
