The time has come to take the pulse of 2024. At least, in regards to the video games it has given us. The big summer events are about to begin and will define the current year more and better, but in the absence of already announced bombshells such as Indiana Jones and the Great Circle, the announced return of Assassin’s Creed or the next Call of Duty , what is already on the table deserves a proper review. Or, at least, a special treatment.
In the year 2024, the most inspired indies look into the eyes of blockbusters and cult sagas, making it clear that there are no sacred cows or success formulas that work twice giving the same results. In the process, we accumulate too many essentials. Blessed problem! Of course, we have proposed a solution: we have made a selection of the 13 most outstanding games so that you can make a well-deserved space for them in your summer… or winter plans.
We are aware that we have left many in the pipeline and when choosing between them we have opted more for reception and variety than for other factors. We also rule out remasters or similar; and although games as great as Sea of Thieves or Mario Vs Donkey Kong have reached new platforms this year, they do not technically count as a launch. The result, as you will see, is round and we even reserve two exceptions, but as always we leave you the last word through the comments.
Because this is only and exclusively about putting together games that you are going to like and ordering them alphabetically. A simple claim, but not easy. Without further ado, these are lThe 13 best video games so far in 2024
Animal Well
The biggest surprise so far in 2024 has its own name: Animal Well. Under an aspect that evokes the classics, we find an adventure capable of satisfying our curiosity while ensuring that each discovery or setback gives new nuances to our ongoing game. A jewel that, furthermore, has been made by a single person.
Balatro
Balatro It is an impossible combination… but its playable essence is also based on the concept of impossible combinations. Defining it without undermining the experience is complicated, given that it can technically be defined as a poker roguelike. However, beyond the most basic rules we will begin to come across cards that transform the game. A genius.
Botany Manor
Are you looking for a special game, to enjoy at your own pace and enjoy it in small sips? The name you are looking for is Botany Manor. We walk freely through a huge mansion that is also an ingenious puzzle that is solved by making different types of flowers and plants bloom. The best? You will have to get lost in this small bucolic paradise to look for clues while weaving a little story.
Dragon’s Dogma 2
Capcom is still on a roll: Dragon’s Dogma 2 It is a complete visual muscle gain and also a sensational refuge for those passionate about epic fantasy, promoting spectacular battles that draw muscle from the RE Engine, the engine that is also the common denominator of all its recent hits.
Final Fantasy VII Rebirth
Final Fantasy VII Rebirth It is the heart of a glorious trilogy, but also a carousel of emotions. Cloud and company’s trip goes awry but that doesn’t mean there are places to have a great time. Successfully alternating between epic, fun and fanservice. We knew it was going to be essential, but how much it ended up affecting us caught us by surprise.
Hades 2
It may be in the early access phase, but Supergiant Games knows how to raise its own bar: playable excellence, the addictive roguelite formula and a visual section that overflows with talent with almost handmade finishes round out the sequel to Hades
Helldivers 2
Not even PlayStation itself thought that Helldivers 2 I was going to like it so much, but it not only gives that festival of shootouts that is promised from the cover itself, but what has been achieved is terribly addictive, convincing millions of players (especially PC) to spread the authentic democracy of the Super Earth through space.
Fase de Bonus: Princess Peach: Showtime!
The princess of the mushroom kingdom stars in Nintendo’s most original game so far this year, and her great achievement is not so much to reinvent the classic formula but to offer something entertaining and different for everyone, including the little ones in the house. Of course, without losing that touch of magic of the house games.
Like a Dragon: Infinite Wealth
All times of the year are good to go get lost in Hawaii for a few days. But if you really want to squeeze out the best and the least known of that paradise on Earth, you will be interested in doing it with Ichiban and her gang as your guide and guinea pigs. The Yakuza saga never failsand less with its main deliveries.
No Rest for the Wicked
The creators of Ori and the Blind Forest y Ori and the Will of the Wisps give a total ride with No Rest for the Wicked: Visually it is a marvel, but once again where it catches you is in its way of understanding and taking you to the essence of Action RPGs sweeping you home. A game that rubs shoulders with the best of 2024 on its own merits.
Prince of Persia: The Lost Crown
Ubisoft’s Prince of Persia has returned twice and in both cases reclaiming the charm of the original classics: Prince of Persia: The Lost Crown is a modern metroidvania whose gameplay will soon meet your expectations, while The Rogue Prince of Persia bears the signature and unique touch of the creators of Dead Cells. You will love both.
Sand Land
The imps of Akira Toriyama They make the leap from paper to video games, and in the process they leave us with an open-world action RPG that serves as a perfect tribute to their legacy: hilarious vehicles and robots, moments of genuine emotion, and a demon prince thirsty for adventure. If you enjoy the manga and the series, the video game Sand Land you will like it more.
Stellar Blade
In Stellar Blade the gameplay and the plot go hand in hand, and that ends up giving a total boost to the result: SHIFT UP is shamelessly inspired by lots of Action RPG to make a game that does not invent the wheel, but is masterfully effective, challenging in battles and with lots of clichés taken from the world of anime well thrown together. The result: a winning combination.
Tekken 8
The most aggressive fighting game in the series Tekken It is also the one that gives the most wings to veteran players and newcomers: each round encourages players to take risks and take the initiative thanks to new mechanics and a simplified alternative style, making it not only more fun to play, but make the fighting much more brutal. An essential delivery.
Bonus Phases: MultiVersus
A listing without a Bonus phase? Never! What do you see here MultiVersus It is due to a technicality, to be fair: technically it came out this year and it is one of the games that you will enjoy the most, both for its fun, and for the way in which it sweeps home when it comes to adapting to the Smash formula Bros. However, we have not forgotten that it was actually available since 2022 and during a very, very long open beta.
Luckily, we have this extra section to extend the selection a little further. And be careful, you have the last words to add even more great games in the comments.
