The next Alien film brings news and we can say that the director’s choices are pleasing and promising. What exactly can we learn on this topic?
The debate among fans of the Alien saga remains eternal: do you prefer the claustrophobic horror of Alien or the hectic action of Aliens? Director Fede Álvarez decided against it and opted for a fusion of the two styles in his new film, Alien: Romulus. And of course, fans are delighted and especially happy to have the best of both worlds.
A bold mix for the next alien
As explained EmpireOnline During his interview, Fede Álvarez found an ingenious solution to this classic dilemma. “Asking an Alien fan to choose between the two is a perverse question” he explains. “So I asked myself‘How can I do both? ?'”. His approach is to combine the progressive thrills of “Alien” with the explosive intensity of “Aliens”, setting the action at a point between these two cult films.
The aesthetic of Alien: Romulus reflects this duality. The Renaissance space station is divided into two distinct sections: Remus, which recalls the oppressive atmosphere of Alien, and Romulus, which recalls the more advanced atmosphere of Aliens.There is a moment where the characters wander through familiar areas of the Nostromo“Alvarez explained it.”Then they cross a building and on the other side: Boom! They are in a hallway that looks like Hadley’s Hope [d’Aliens].”
This story centers around Cailee Spaeny in the role of Rain, armed with an alien-style pulse rifle, and David Jonsson in the role of Andy, her adopted android brother. “When his father died, he left Andy as a kind of caretaker“Alvarez explained it.”But Andy is an older model and somewhat damaged. He becomes more of a younger brother to her than a surrogate father. And that was always the core of the story: this relationship between the two… and how it develops when everything goes wrong.”
This hybrid approach could well be a natural evolution of the Alien saga. By bringing together the most powerful elements of the first two films, Álvarez hopes to rekindle fans’ interest while adding a new dimension to the series’ universe. This method could also serve as a model for other film franchises, showing that harking back to the past while innovating can lead to rich and engaging cinematic experiences.
