It’s been a rollercoaster week for Sony Interactive Entertainment, and it’s all thanks to unforced errors made in Hellraiser 2. In a surprising move, the company, through developer Arrowhead, has decided that all PC players will need to create a PlayStation Network account and link it to their Steam account if they want to continue playing the game.
PSN account linking has been an option since the game launched, but suddenly making it a requirement pissed people off, especially since many simply thought cannot Create a PSN account as the service is not available where they live. Sony was so committed to this move that it had to stop selling the game in more than 170 countries where PSN is not available.
Needless to say, the backlash was overwhelming, causing the game’s Steam rating to plummet and eliciting overwhelmingly negative reactions everywhere. While many players are outraged, some are turning their attention to Sony’s other major upcoming PC release: Ghost of Tsushima Director’s Cut.

We are just days away from the long-awaited PC release of Ghost of Tsushima, which will be available on Steam and the Epic Games Store on May 17th. That’s all well and good until you remember that Tsushima is Sony’s first PC game to implement PlayStation overlay directly within the game, effectively turning your PC into a PS5. This allows you to earn trophies, and is required for the game’s Legends Online mode, which supports cross-play with PS4/5.
Players seemed frightened by the backlash for Hellraiser 2 and began to wonder if the same PSN account linking policy would affect Tsushima, especially since it’s a primarily single-player game.In response to fans, Sucker Punch developers Clarify on Twitter that period of time You can Linking your Steam and PSN accounts is required to play Legends Online (and access the nifty new overlays), the single-player mode has no such requirement.

It’s understandable that you need to connect a PSN account to play Legends, especially considering that the online mode supports cross-platform play. At least that’s made clear before launch, rather than months after players buy the game.
The good news continues, as the Helldiver 2 situation that started all this appears to have been resolved. Earlier today, Sony removed Hellraiser 2’s PSN account link requirement, so hopefully this will teach the publisher to be more resourceful in the future.
Ghost of Tsushima Director’s Cut will be released on PC on May 16th.
