Role-playing games are both a curse and a blessing: they usually spread huge game worlds in front of the player, in which he can lose himself endlessly. Skyrim, Divinity: Original Sin, The Witcher 3 – if you get involved with these games, you should be happy to dig 100 hours off your schedule. But where does all the time come from, if not steal? The black eye: Book of Heroes wants to be the answer to this question.
The black eye: Book of Heroes is, so to speak, the game counterpart to the miller's milk rice: the dungeon bite when the little role-playing hunger comes. No sprawling open world, no epic questlines, no 100+ hours of gameplay. Instead, the Finnish developers at Random Potion deliberately design their game for the brisk role-playing quickie during lunch break or the gap between dinner and bringing children to bed.

The dungeons last on average half a hour, in no case longer than an hour. Similar to Diablo, they are generated randomly by arranging the components from corridors, vaults and halls like dominoes in a different arrangement. With up to three friends (optionally also with other online or AI-controlled competitors) as a classic party, you will fight classic real-time fights according to DSA regulations, edition 5, and solve minor puzzles.
Anyone familiar with the DSA universe will be familiar with the Middle Kingdom that emerged from the Second Battle of Demons. Book of Heroes is playing there. The world itself cannot be traveled. Instead, you select the next dungeon in the map by clicking on the icon.
Between the quests you can relax in the tavern at the Black Boar, where you can not only lift the jug and exchange information with other guests, but also buy new equipment, improve existing ones and brew potions from the alchemist. Then it goes on to the next dungeon.

There will be 12 classes, each with their own little story to tell – not an epic like the Origins storylines from Dragon Age, but rather thin threads that spin through the game, motivate the storyline and define its goal.
As befits a party role-playing game, interaction and agreement are at the forefront like tank and damage dealers, while healers and magicians stay in the background. Although the fighting takes place in real time, the full program of the DSA rules and regulations runs in the background, i.e.: Every action is carried out with dice, which typically have more than six sides and are calculated in complex formulas against your character values. The occasional puzzles should not inhibit the flow of the game, but only to loosen it up. It is often enough to put statues on the appropriate floor slabs – just nothing to scramble about.
The black eye: Book of Heroes is developed by a small team of just eleven men in Tampere, Finland, for the Munich publisher Wild River. Despite the similar look, you shouldn't measure it against cRPG heavyweights like Divinity: Original Sin or Pillars of Eternity. The dungeons from the same three graphic sets of cave, ruin and forest repeat themselves after a short time. Whether this will be enough to captivate the promised 20 hours of playing time and justify the 40 euros will have to be clarified at the release in early summer.
