Game news The Callisto Protocol: a terrifying but subtly orchestrated nightmare
Callisto Protocol is without a doubt one of the most anticipated games of this year’s end. Of course you still have to like fear, the title suggests itself as a particularly harsh survival horror with great dead space vibes. And this making-of should say a lot about the tone of the adventure.
Horror mastered
We hear a lot about The Callisto Protocol, and for good reason: it marks the big return of survival horrors like Dead Space, whose title was also produced by the same director, Glen Schofield.
In three good years of development, this new entity, driven directly by Krafton (the publisher behind PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds), has therefore had plenty of time to refine into the most oppressive and horrifying horror possible. And if the result is extremely violent and gory – even to the point that it can’t be released in Japan – nevertheless, it is very meticulously staged, as this fifteen-minute making-of shows us
Welcome to hell
So when this pretty dev diary is interrupted by the devs talking, We also find the intervention of several specialists somewhat strange. Starting with Doctor of Psychology Drea Letamendi, who admits it “Helplessness and despair usually go hand in hand”do “both refer to a loss of control experience”. Luckily, the Callisto Protocol targets that feeling.
We can also see in the making-of Robert Kirkman, creator of The Walking Dead:
As a storyteller, it’s important to cross the line between helplessness and despair. Even if you want your characters to be under as much pressure as possible, or your audience is like, “How are you going to get out of this?” it’s necessary to have an element of hope. Otherwise, you lose that audience.
On his side, This feeling of powerlessness is directly commented on by Glen Schofield, whom he considers a kind of “physical state” and including not having enough ammo, having the right weapon, or not knowing where to go. A subtle balance that every (good) survival horror is based on.
The Callisto Protocol will be available on December 2nd for PC, PS5, PS4, Xbox Series and Xbox One.
