There are few things to like more than a good destruction system, especially when we’re talking about a shooter with a respectable variety of explosives. If we talk about tearing down buildings in an open war, you don’t have to think much to get to the saga Battlefield.
Electronic Arts has had the craziest saga so far when it comes to destruction during multiplayer games. It is an issue that they have been neglecting over time, but we have many videos that demonstrate the crazy things that they have allowed us to do: go through houses with tanks, demolish buildings and cranes, break dams to modify the map, launch a rocket to burn people. the enemies fighting below.
The destruction of Battlefield came to a head in Battlefield 4, when the Levolution event in Shanghai, which literally collapsed an entire building without cuts, often caused servers to be taken for granted. It was (and is) a wonderful show that I recommend anyone see! And let’s not talk about the zeppelin in Battlefield 1 or the buildings in Battlefield V.
Needless to say, the Electronic Arts franchise does not have a monopoly on destruction and we have seen real atrocities in other video games. However, at the beginning of December 2023, a video game was released that has raised the level of destruction during multiplayer battles. It’s called The Finals and you’re not prepared to see how absurd it is.
The Finals: the passion for destruction taken to the extreme
I’m sure most of you know The Finals. It is a free-to-play/free first-person shooter (FPS) developed by Embark Studios (partly formed by former members of Battlefield at Electronic Arts) and released on December 8 for PC, PS5 and Xbox Series /S.
He had a warm welcome from the community. Thousands of players of different shooters (Warzone, Call of Duty, Battlefield, Valorant, CS:GO…) attended the call and were pleasantly surprised. Suffice it to say that their reviews on Steam are Mostly Positive, with 74% of the 70,274 reviews available at the time of writing this post.
In terms of figures, The Finals It has 86,887 simultaneous players and 151,225 players in the last 24 hours at the time of writing these words. On the other hand, its record of simultaneous players has been 242,619, according to steamdb. And remember that to these figures we must add PS5 and Xbox Series X/S, for which we have no data. In other words: good numbers for a video game that came out less than a month ago.
If you want my opinion before getting into the matter, I think that The Finals It is among the best multiplayer shooters that have been released in recent times. It works, it has a striking setting and its proposal is quite original. For now it only has two game modes, several maps, three character classes and a respectable arsenal.
Even so, its format of facing teams of three players does not convince me. I’m not saying it’s bad, but it’s certainly an impediment (the only one) for me to enjoy The Finals. If one day the 6v6 matchups come (for example), I will be there. I encourage you to share your opinion in comments.
The absurd made destruction
Now, let’s get to the heart of the matter. The Finals It has a destruction system that borders on the absurd. It is not something that should surprise anyone, taking into account those behind the development. It was one of the sections that caught the players’ attention the most.
It turns out that we can demolish many buildings with relative ease. We have at our disposal a wide variety of explosives (inventory and scattered around the world) and even a class that literally goes through walls like Juggernaut from Marvel or Oryx from Rainbow Six Siege, another game that is all about destruction.
The community has been testing destruction all month, since we have seen pitched battles for objectives (money tellers) that appear on the roof of a building and end up at ground level because players have burst the ceilings and even the pillars so that the building ends up collapsing.
Content creator ZelexFPS has one of the best videos on the topic. He uses different methods to create openings in walls, breaking roofs and floors, collapsing buildings by breaking pillars and destroying different elements of the scenarios that can hinder our passage. He even manages to leave a hollow warehouse made from C4.
Although the previous video is a demonstration of the possibilities offered by the destruction of The Finals, it lacks the magic touch that turns anything exploding into the air into a movie scene: the shootouts, the bloodthirsty interaction between players. Did you not want destruction? Well, have two cups. Here you have a video full of action and things flying through the air belonging to the MP1st media on YouTube. Enjoy it!
And since I already see a few coming, I’ve made sure to include in this post a comparison between The Finals and Battlefield 2042. I don’t intend to open a debate about which is better or worse in general terms. That has not been my intention at any time when mentioning them both in a publication. Rather, I want us to see the similarities and differences between the two.
Content creator GameV provides us with a video that compares the destruction of both games. The Battlefield saga has a more limited (although varied) and detailed destruction system, while The Finals Goes for a more pragmatic approach: destruction is less pretty, but in exchange it offers the possibility of blowing up almost anything. And it is not an exaggeration.
The destruction in The Finals It is not a casual or one-off event, but something constant that will affect all of us sooner or later. Without going any further, a player tore down a building where he was defending an objective during my first game. He was barricaded in such a way that I could only see the ceilings and floors collapsing.
Embark Studios has managed to The Finals have a destruction that triumphs in two very important fields: spectacle and fun. It looks good for both players and spectators (videos/live) and offers a huge range of possibilities when it comes to attacking and defending objectives. Plus, blowing up a building with an RPG is orgasmic in any universe… especially when there are enemies inside.
