The PS5 Pro is much more powerful than the PlayStation 5, but that’s apparently causing problems with two cult licensed games, various sources report.
The PS5 Pro has it all and promises great things for the future. But the additional performance hasn’t completely convinced us in our test so far. In some cases, the improvements are difficult to see, which tends to reduce interest in the machine for those who already own the base model. In addition, the original console released in 2020 seems to be performing better with two productions, including a completely new one.
Silent Hill 2 Remake has problems on PS5 Pro
The list of games optimized for PS5 Pro will continue to grow as the weeks and months go by. However, it seems that problems have been identified with some of them. And one culprit would be obvious: the PSSR (PlayStation Spectral Super Resolution). The scaling technology developed by Sony allows games to be displayed in 4K, for example, but at a lower resolution. Then the magic of AI takes care of restoring the missing images to deliver a dazzling result. For this reason, players should not be able to see any difference from the native resolution.
In practice, it appears that the PS5 Pro’s PSSR is currently struggling with these two very large games, which is disappointing and even annoying. The first is Silent Hill 2 Remake. Reddit users have complained on the forums about issues with flickering, particularly in puddles and trees, or even “broken” reflections. While the game is said to have a PS5 Pro update, if we refer to the game’s listing on PlayStation Store, this doesn’t seem to be the case. The “Quality” mode is still present at 30 fps with no improvement and the “Performance” mode suffers from a flickering issue.
We noticed the same thing among our colleagues at Digital Foundry, but with Star Wars Jedi Survivor. “If you watch this video you can see how unstable the game is with PSSR in performance mode. Personally, I would even say that the game is significantly worse than the old performance mode. explains Oliver Mackenzie. For them, these major image problems with the PS5 Pro could be due to the way the PSSR works. For example, if there is a low level of detail at the base, the results with the scaling tool may produce disappointing results.
