At a Tech-Talk in Korea a developer from Pearl Abyss demonstrated which techniques the studio behind Black Desert Online and the upcoming Crimson Desert has developed for its new engine. The developers also showed several short videos that were impressive Weather and particle effects flaunt.

But even those who are not interested in the single-player role-playing game with multiplayer elements should take a look at the clips shown: The various graphic effects are really worth seeing and show us how game graphics will develop in future titles.

The impressive weather effects in the video

In a first clip we see how a flowering meadow is transformed into an inhospitable wasteland in fast motion by storms and snowfall and the snow piles higher and higher. In contrast to the other videos, it has not yet been confirmed whether this scene was actually recorded in Crimson Desert. But it would certainly be fascinating to be able to experience such a spectacle in a game:

In addition to these videos, the developers demonstrated and explained other aspects of their engine, which is why we summarize the most important points for you.

What can the new Pearl Abyss engine do?

The developers are working on various techniques for representing light, particles, weather and other aspects. The following list sums up the most important things:

  • Raytracing: The engine should support various ray tracing effects.
  • Destruction: Pearl Abyss is also working on an improved destruction simulation. In the case of a destructible model, only the part hit by a force or an object should initially break and the other parts of the model should be influenced by the rubble.
  • Water: When a character or object moves through water, that movement triggers a wave that ricochets off the bank and sloshes back.
  • Fog: The developers simulate fog in a similar way to a liquid: If a character walks through the fog, it moves in streaks around the character.
  • Pressure waves: Movement, magic, or explosions can trigger pressure waves that affect nearby objects.
  • Mud, Snow and Leaves: If a character walks over a snowy or muddy surface, he leaves clear traces and pushes the snow aside. As already shown in the video, walking also stirs up fallen leaves. By the way, snow and leaf physics could already be admired in the gameplay trailer for Crimson Desert:
