Paintbucket Games is currently working on a spiritual sequel to the award-winning Nazi resistance game Through the Darkest of Times. We’ll tell you here what exactly awaits you in the new title The Darkest Files.
The Berlin-based development studio Paintbucket Games builds on the success of Through the Darkest of Times and delivers a new adventure with The Darkest Files, which also helps to solve Nazi crimes in the post-war period. The title, which is currently in development, is scheduled for release in 2023 for PC, Mac, PlayStation, Xbox and Switch, but has no concrete release date yet. Visitors to gamescom next week will be able to see a first demo version in the Indie Arena.
What’s the matter? In The Darkest Files you take on the role of the young public prosecutor Esther Katz in Germany in the 1950s. She is part of the team around the famous Hessian Attorney General Fritz Bauer. From now on you investigate crimes committed by former Nazi officials, collect evidence, question witnesses and finally bring the perpetrators to justice. You embark on an emotional journey through the chronology of crimes and the dark times of Nazi rule.
In this respect, the game has a real historical background: the Hessian Attorney General Fritz Bauer founded a special unit of young, unincriminated prosecutors to prosecute and investigate Nazi crimes and prosecute the perpetrators. Among other things, he became known as one of the key informants in the search for the organizer of the Holocaust Adolf Eichmann and through the Frankfurt Auschwitz trials in the 1960s.
From the official side, the new game is stated as follows:
- Players search files from the Nazi era, question relatives, witnesses and suspects to find out the truth.
- They draw conclusions, evaluate evidence and reconstruct the crime in real time.
- They question witnesses and suspects, immerse themselves in what is being told in the first person and can thus better understand the deeds and discover contradictions and clues.
- They then discuss their findings with their team of investigative experts and build a compelling case.
- Players must find the correct lawsuit, file a complaint, and have the criminals arrested.
- Finally, it is necessary to convince the judiciary to uncover the truth and bring the perpetrators to justice.
