Kickstarter campaigns are everywhere these days, but it’s rare to find a big new game from some big-name developer. That doesn’t mean fundraising isn’t a thing anymore for some developers, though, as Frost Giant Studios actually raised money via a very successful Kickstarter with Stormgate – and now it’s just announced a launch for that on StartEngine A crowdfunding campaign for the game. In a press release, Frost Giant explained that this was to “provide marketing support for Stormgate’s upcoming Early Access launch on Steam,” which is a bit strange indeed, but if necessary.

Kickstarter offers in-kind rewards and more, while StartEngine “invites potential investors to “own a piece of Frost Giant” by investing in the studio, becoming shareholders with personal shares that can share in the studio’s potential future success.” Yes, basically you will become a shareholder in StartEngine and receive some financial benefits should the game continue to be successful after launch.
Frost Giant explains the decision to raise money on StartEngine because many “large publishers [are] Hundreds of game workers are fired seemingly every day, and decisions are made that prioritize short-term profits over the happiness of workers and players… We choose to control our own destiny and self-publish our games in the West with the direct support of our player community. ”
Stormgate was first released a few years ago, letting you pilot a 20-foot-tall mech to save the world from alien invaders – it was honestly a strong pitch, and it had some big industry talent behind it, This is helpful. The game went on to become the second most played game during this month’s Steam Next Fest, but its Early Access release date has yet to be announced.
