Gaming News The developers of GOTY 2023 not only developed Baldur’s Gate 3, but also supported this excellent video game without asking for anything in return
Larian Studios recently hit the grand slam by winning Game of the Year awards for Baldur’s Gate 3 at all five so-called grand ceremonies. But did you know that the studio was directly involved in the financing campaign for a game that caused a surprise?
Larian Studios: From Divine Divinity to Baldur’s Gate 3
Today Larian Studios is a development company whose name is known all over the world. Creators of the Divinity universe, the Belgian studio shattered its glass ceiling by attaching its name to a legendary license: Baldur’s Gate. The franchise, born in 1998 at BioWare, is set in the world of Dungeons & Dragons. So they are role-playing games, even if the Dark Alliance series is more action-oriented. Regardless, Larian Studios was given the task of bringing Baldur’s Gate III to life. A wise choice because the title has become established the game of the year 2023
Baldur’s Gate 3, despite its lack of accessibility (most of which has been addressed in recent patches), ticks all the boxes and makes Larian a studio with a truly global reach. His journey now resembles that of a CD project, which started with few resources before becoming an independent juggernaut. Additionally, the Polish studio owes its breakthrough to Baldur’s Gate, but that’s another story for another day. Achieving Divine Divinity, Beyond Divinity, Divinity 2, Dragon Commander, both Divinity: Original Sin and Baldur’s Gate 3 obviously required a lot of work, but that didn’t stop the teams to see what is being done elsewhere, or to remember your own journey.
When Larian Studios discreetly supports other studios
Recently, Blasphemous level designer Enrique Colinet revealed this on X (ex-Twitter). Larian Studios was simply one of the biggest backers of the game on Kickstarter. Before we move on, a quick useful reminder: Kickstarter is a crowdfunding platform where creatives come together seek direct support
In the case of Blasphemous, The Game Kitcher launched its fundraising campaign in May 2017. A successful adventure that greatly helped the studio to release its title in September 2019. It was very well received as a ch allenging action and platform game set in a dark world where the religious lexicon is omnipresent. The game developers hoped to win back $50,000. $333,246 was raised
Not many people know this, but Larian Studios was one of the biggest supporters of our Kickstarter campaign dedicated to Blasphemous. They paid a four-figure sum, never asked for a reward, and simply continued to develop one of the best games in recent years. Legends!
A nice gesture that shows Larian hasn’t forgotten his way through the Kickstarter box. In fact, the studio used the leverage of the crowdfunding campaign to launch Divinity Original Sin in 2013. An initiative that was also successful, as Swen Vincke and his teams were successful Recovered $944,282 After Larian had asked for 400,000, he was able to continue and was no longer dependent on the support of a publisher.
