For the tenth anniversary of The Elder Scrolls Online, the developers at Zenimax are not breaking with tradition: a new expansion for the MMORPG is coming in 2024! It’s called Gold Road and follows the events of Necrom on March 11th on the PC with a prologue. For most of the content, you will have to wait until June 3rd on PC and June 18th on consoles to discover the main features of this new chapter.

Gold Road, the new area that tells the story of Necrom

While a certain proportion of players are calmly waiting for The Elder Scrolls 6, others are probably patient with The Elder Scrolls Online. The massively multiplayer role-playing game (MMORPG) will celebrate its tenth anniversary in 2024. Like every year in January, the developers of Zenimax Online presented last night the new features that the game will receive in the coming months. This new chapter is called Gold Road and is set in the new Western Weald zone.

The latter lies between the imperial city, the Côte d’Or and the Marche de la Camarde (see map opposite). Its capital will be Skingrad and will be divided into three zones: The Golden Road; Forestaube and the Colovian Highlands. Different biomes that share the theme of autumn. West Weald will be the setting for the remaining events of Necrom. Chapter 2023 ended with the proof of the existence of another Daedric Prince. “The Gold Road” picks up on this revelation, as in the prologue players learn that the prince has been imprisoned and has escaped to his prison.

In the Gold Road quests, players learn everything about the survivor. This is Ithelia, who has no memory of her identity or what happened to her.. With the goal of restoring Ithelia’s powers while boosting her memory, players will explore the new areas.

Create your own spells using scripture

The Arcanist arrived with Necrom, remains the last class introduced into the game for now. With the Gold Road chapter, Zenimax Online Studio presents the Scripture system: one of the potential ancestors of spell creation. Scribing is also interesting from a developer’s perspective because it opens the door to more individualization for players. But what exactly is that?

Scripture allows players to collect and customize unique abilities, customizing their character’s playstyle by modifying their primary, secondary and tertiary effects.

Zenimax explains that at launch it will focus on weapons, the Mages Guild, the Warriors Guild, the Soul Magic skills, and the Attack and Support skill lines, so that “Everybody can participate“. Each of these lines requires at least one ability to be unlocked to make this DIY possible. You then have to take it into your own hands

  • Grimoire: Skill or skill core that never changes
  • Scripts: Each spell book has 3 script slots. These slots give you the freedom to change the different characteristics of the skill. (e.g. healing/damage, damage type, enhancement, etc.)
  • Inks: A consumable used to modify or engrave an ability.

For fashion enthusiasts, this writing feature also aims to make aesthetic changes in skills, pet appearance, etc. Overall, Gold Road seems to be a promising chapter. See you on March 11th (PC) and March 26th (consoles) to start reading.
