The Elder Scrolls goes into the next round with a sixth installment, but you will have to wait a long time for this one. Director Todd Howard also knows that this is not necessarily optimal and has now made further comments.
At E3 2018, Bethesda did something rather atypical for the studio: It announced The Elder Scrolls VI, although it was still far from being shown in action in any form, let alone published. However, one wanted to inform the countless Elder Scrolls fans that the franchise will continue.
As a result, the studio had repeatedly emphasized that the sci-fi RPG Starfield would definitely be released before The Elder Scrolls VI – and this title will not be released until November 11, 2022. Only then will work on The Elder Scrolls VI really pick up speed, especially since it is a mammoth project that will keep players busy for a decade – like The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim before.
In conversation with IGN Director Todd Howard has now commented on the background to the release planning and made it clear that it is anything but optimal that The Elder Scrolls VI will only appear so many years after Skyrim.
“When I look at franchises, I wonder if they’re dynamic. Skyrim still is; so when I look at The Elder Scrolls as a franchise, I ask myself, is she healthy? Is she doing well? Yes! Would you then planning to have such a long period of time between Skyrim and the sequel? I really can’t say that’s a good thing. I wish I could wave a magic wand and the game we want to make just come straight out. But there are also other things that we want to do, “says Howard.
This is where Starfield comes in; Starting work on this sci-fi RPG was a now-or-never decision after the release of Fallout 4 in 2015.
“We wanted to do something different for a long time and play in a new universe. If not now, then when? We felt that if we didn’t do it now, we could never do it. We had a good feeling where The Elder Scrolls was a franchise, especially with The Elder Scrolls Online, so the time was right to make Starfield, “continued the director.
However, Howard admits that in the end, unfortunately, everything takes longer than the studio itself would aim for. However, the team wants to make sure that everything will turn out right in the end. With respect to The Elder Scrolls VI, that means ensuring that the game meets the high standards of the RPG franchise to date, and in a “really big and impressive way.”
