FF7 Rebirth is a good game, but still full of secrets, so much so that even the guide struggles to answer players’ questions. Which still seems pretty strange.

The book Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth Ultimania, which aims to educate fans about the various aspects of the game, itself seems to be struggling to reveal the secrets of this puzzling ending. In FF7 Rebirth, the player once again follows the adventures of Cloud and his companions in a universe where parallel dimensions and alternate timelines provide a thick layer of narrative complexity. The final scene, in which Cloud witnesses dramatic events, leaves the player with more questions than answers. The scene that everyone feared occurs: Aerith is executed by a Sephiroth, more cruel than ever before, except that in the original game the scene is brutal and fast, but here the alternate worlds collide and we get a look at several fates Shape of lightning.
The battle in which we face Sephiroth shortly after Aerith’s death doesn’t help to see things any more clearly, as the last of the Cetras even takes part in the ultimate confrontation before disappearing… and then reappearing at the very end of the game At the moment only Cloud seems to be able to see him. This has led to speculation that Cloud may be experiencing visions from alternate realities or that he may simply be refusing to accept Aerith’s loss.
An ultimate guide that doesn’t answer everything
FF7 Rebirth Ultimania has recently been available. It is an “ultimate” book that offers many details and anecdotes about the game and its development. The book is also about the ending, the fans’ questions and this desire to lose players in order to leave them dangling until FF7 Remake 3. So the book teaches us that everything is intentional, it also specifically states that it is still unclear whether Aerith is dead or alive, suggesting that the answers could be covered in a future sequel.
Cloud may be having visions because he cannot accept his friend’s death, or perhaps he is seeing another Aerith, a vision from another dimension. Some theories also suggest that Cloud may well be able to see beyond his own dimension, such as this sign that marks the sky and is a harbinger of an impending end. There are no answers to many questions at the moment, because as it is, FF7 Rebirth’s Ultimania doesn’t give us an answer. It’s even said that the ending is deliberately open to suggestion and the developers don’t want to answer fans’ questions, giving them a chance to come up with theories.
Clarifications and ultimately few answers

Here too, the goal is clear: to give players an overview and to strengthen the connection between the two works, the new dimension of the remake and that of the original game. Are the two universes parallel or do they collide? Could Sephiroth succeed in his famous reunion? Could Cloud’s lightning bolts be symptomatic of the progression of Sephiroth’s ultimate goal? There are still a lot of gray areas left and the makers obviously don’t want to reveal everything at the moment. We’ll have to wait a few more years before we have answers to our questions, until 2027 if we are to believe Square Enix.
