The Finals, which launched in December, was initially quite hyped and well received, but since then player numbers have dropped noticeably.
At the beginning of December, The Finals was released out of nowhere and without prior notice on the occasion of the Game Awards 2023 – and in the period that followed, the free-to-play first-person shooter was quite hyped and was very well received by players. Shortly after the release, over 240,000 gamers joined the shooter, sometimes at the same time, but this initial enthusiasm has now apparently noticeably diminished.
In December, The Finals even managed to overtake first-person shooter great Call of Duty on Steam; The top value for gamers playing at the same time was loud SteamDB at 242,619 people – but in the meantime, The Finals has recorded a decline in player numbers of almost 80 percent from this peak.
In the last 24 hours, the peak was only 49,542 gamers on Steam at the same time – still not a bad value, but also a long way from the initial euphoria surrounding the shooter. It is unclear what the number of players will be on the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S consoles, as there is no freely accessible data collection there. Whether interest has noticeably decreased there too can currently only be speculated about.
In this respect, it will remain exciting to see what the future of The Finals will bring. Since its launch, the developers have released regular updates and also promised new game content for the future. It remains to be seen whether plans will change after around 80 percent of players have migrated to Steam in less than two months since the release.
