A meager 13 percent on Rotten Tomatoes and a measly 51 million grossed so far – Madame Web has been in the cinema for a little longer than a week, but one thing is already clear: This is going to be a pretty big flop.

Don’t expect more Madame Web for now

Because this means that the film, which may have cost over 100 million dollars, performs poorly historically in the context of modern superhero cinema. Even Morbius, which was similarly ripped online, came away with a worldwide box office of 170 million in 2022.

The Madame Web debacle could have dire consequences not only for planned sequels, but for an entire film universe. This is according to a new report from The Hollywood Reporter in which industry experts and insiders give their assessments.

The consensus is: We won’t see a new Madame Web for another decade. The film clearly teased potential sequels that would continue the stories of Spider-Women Sydney Sweeney, Isabela Merced and Celeste O’Connor.

Fixed Kraven Sony’s Spider-Verse?

The mood at Sony is considered accordingly grim designated. It even goes so far that the film studio’s current Spider-Verse is apparently on the brink. While the Venom films were commercial hits, they disappointed critics. Morbius and Madame Web also turned out to be flops at the box office.

Kraven the Hunter could potentially turn things around on August 30, 2024, while Tom Hardy wants to say goodbye to his role as anti-hero with Venom 3 on November 8. If that doesn’t work, insiders expect a hard cut from Sony and another reboot of their own superhero universe.

A little reminder: After Sam Raimi’s Spider-Man 3 failed, a reboot followed with Andrew Webb’s films starring Andrew Garfield. There were also ambitious plans for this universe, which came about after the failure of The Amazing Spider-Man 2 and the big Sony hack of 2014 (more on this here Film releases) were buried.

In direct contrast to the stumbling Spider-Verse without Spider-Man are, of course, Sony’s animated films: both Into the Spider-Verse and Across the Spider-Verse with Miles Morales as the focus delight critics and fans and were also unprecedented successes at the box office. However, these films will be treated and viewed separately.

Meanwhile at the MCU …
