XMG, the sister company of the German PC manufacturer Schenker, transports the AMD Ryzen 9 3950X with sixteen cores from the desktop into a gaming laptop.
In maximum configuration, the XMG Apex 15 should be the most powerful notebook currently available – at least in terms of multi-core performance.
Desktop CPU in a laptop – does that work at all?
When it comes to transplanting a CPU that is actually intended for desktop PCs into a notebook, the focus is primarily on the waste heat and the clock rates. However, XMG wants to be able to deliver consistently high performance through »first-class cooling«.
A Limitation compared to the normal version of the Ryzen 9 3950X there is nevertheless: The CPU is not operated in the 105-watt standard, but in the 65-watt eco mode. The clock frequency is specified as 2.6 to 4.2 GHz (versus 3.5 to 4.7 GHz in normal mode).
Performance-optimized graphics card
XMG allows the Apex 15 to choose between an Nvidia Geforce RTX 2060 or RTX 2070 in the performance-optimized Max-P design – in contrast to the more economical Max-Q design, which specializes in laptops.
The GPUs should be the "latest revision". However, it is unclear whether this may even refer to the respective super variants (RTX 2060 Super and RTX 2070 Super).

Is the XMG Apex 15 suitable for battery operation?
The battery is given as 62 watt hours (Wh). The XMG Apex 15 should therefore be able to be operated without mains power for a short time, but that should not last too long.
This is also the case because the AMD Ryzen 9 3950X does not have an economical integrated graphics unit, which is why the Apex 15 has to use the dedicated GPU throughout.
What does the XMG Apex 15 cost? In the basic version, there are 1,337 euros. If you set everything in the configuration tool (including storage media) to a stop, it will cost over 4,500 euros. It should be available towards the end of April.
