No Man’s Sky’s latest update is called World Update Part One, and it looks to be a pretty big one, even if you can tell from its name that there’s more to come. For now, you can expect some much-improved planet biome technology that will make the game more immersive, as well as a new expedition involving a mech suit equipped with a flamethrower.
This latest update continues a string of updates Hello Games has released so far this year, including the Omega update, the Orbital update that finally brought us ship customization, and the Adrift update that gave us a taste of loneliness. To be fair, it’s hard for me to top giving people an interstellar Pimp My Ride.

As outlined in the patch notes and in the trailer below, the focus of Worlds Part One is on making planetary biomes feel more immersive, thanks to some new technology Hello developed while developing Light No Fire and is now feeding back into NMS.
From improved water surfaces that generate waves and reflections (and ships can now land on them) to improved cloud and volumetric weather effects that wrap around “rolling fog, rain, blizzards, [and] The lava sparks” were integrated into the existing wind and cloud setup, making things feel more tactile and real was the main goal here.
“Sometimes a storm comes in and you see the waves rise and the clouds gather. The new winds, clouds, oceans, atmospheres all come together and it feels like nothing else,” said Hello founder Sean Murray in an in-depth video about the update. “In these new biomes, we’re adding new creatures for you to explore,” he added. “We’re taking the level of diversity even further. It’s not enough to just add more, we want to do something that people haven’t seen before. And of course, these new creatures can all be pets and mounts.”
Alongside these additions there’s a new expedition, with Murray revealing: “We’ve made something very Starship Troopers inspired, it’s really different and it takes you around some cool new planets. Everyone’s fighting the bugs together and progress is community driven. There’s a new mech with heavy armour and a cool flamethrower arm. You’re going to need it!”
I don’t know about you, but to me it sounds a bit like Hellraiser 2 took some inspiration for this mission, which is cool.
