If you’re looking forward to diving into Starfield’s Shattered Space expansion when it launches later this year, then you’re in luck, as Todd Howard has now confirmed that Bethesda has a second DLC ready to follow it up. Furthermore, BGS seems to have settled on an approach to Shattered Space that should offer something that doesn’t involve visiting a bunch of barren, boring moons.
As confirmed by the first official trailer released at the Xbox Showcase earlier this month, Shattered Space tells the story of the Va’ruun, a faction that worships a giant space serpent, and many people are hoping the studio will do more with it. While we already have a general idea of the overall theme, Howard has now provided some details on what we can expect from the expansion on a practical level.

In an interview with YouTuber MrMattyPlays, the developer revealed that the studio began working on Shattered Space in earnest after releasing the base game. He went on to outline how Bethesda “likes” [the DLC] One commonality from the beginning” is that once you reach House Va’ruun’s home planet, “most” of the expansion will take place there.
“It allows us to build landscapes like we would traditionally, and have cities and quests,” he explained. “Content-wise, we’re looking at something similar to what we did with Far Harbor in Fallout 4, which is the scope of our annual story expansion development.” Howard also added that he believes the decision to focus on building a more handcrafted environment for the DLC, rather than the often rather barren procedurally generated planetary landscapes of the base game, which has attracted a lot of criticism, is not only a response to player feedback, but something the studio wanted to do as well.
Regarding the subsequent development of “Broken Space”, Howard said that the idea of expanding every year in the future has a certain appeal, but how many DLCs “Starfield” will get and whether this is equivalent to an annual release in the long term will depend more on whether the team can continue to have good ideas to add new content to the game.
“I would say we more or less want to do it, yes. How long can this last? Hopefully a long time,” he said. “We are planning for the next one, so there will be another one. I don’t know if our goal is to answer all the questions. [regardingthe cadence of Starfield DLC]We’ll look at it and say, ‘Hey, what angle works well? What do we want to add to the game in terms of experience or tone? ‘”
So, you see, there’s at least one more DLC coming after Shattered Space, and this expansion will hopefully be more like the kind of thing most of us are looking for in a Bethesda game in terms of exploration.
