Dance is one of the existential needs of human beings. This was not only evident in the roaring 20s, when people reacted to the global economic crisis with swing and Charleston hype. Even in the corona pandemic, a global wave of enthusiasm for dance is flooding social media channels. And it becomes clear: the youth cultures of this world today share a common dance language.
Because worldwide, many folk dances have been almost completely ousted by dance traditions of the African diaspora within the last hundred years. The correct name of these dances is still debated today. The collective term street dance is common, in France they are called Danses Urbaines and have been pushing from the fringes of society into the temples of high culture for two decades.
From the Cake Walk and Josephine Baker to the Lindy Hop, James Brown’s Shuffle and Michael Jackson’s Moonwalk – the first episode tells of the cultural roots of the dances that determine global dance culture today. Together with the dance historians Katrina Moore and James Frazier, the documentation makes the prehistory and early history of street dance understandable: The beginnings can be traced back to the first slave ships and the plantation economy, until the dances of the jazz and swing era in the 20th century reached mass culture. The first part ends with the rise of hip-hop culture in New York – with it the dance world will change forever.

Alongside London, Paris became the European center of danses urbaines. It was dancers from Haiti or Martinique who brought their dances to the metropolis of Paris in the 1980s, where jazz rock, one of the first European forms of street dance, emerged. Together with dance pioneers such as Gabin Nussier and Niels “Storm” Robitzky, viewers between Paris and Berlin follow the emergence of a new European dance culture. |
