You better cherish your time with Family of the Dragon, because HBO has confirmed that the series will end after four seasons.
Those hoping that the extremely popular House of the Dragon will have as long a run as its spinoff Game of Thrones are in for disappointment. House of the Dragon showrunner and co-creator Ryan Condal announced in a press release yesterday (via Variety) that the spinoff only has two more seasons left, with Season 4 set to wrap things up. Luckily, it’s not all bad news in the least. During the press release, Condal also confirmed that Season 3 is currently being written, with some prep work set to take place this fall, with production scheduled to begin roughly in “early 2025.” That means it might be a while before Season 3 hits theaters, but hey, take your chances!

As for the number of episodes, and whether the third season will have eight episodes like the second season, Condal said: “I haven’t discussed this with HBO. I just expect that the cadence of the show will remain the same from the second season from a dramatic storytelling perspective.” Back in 2022, just before the end of the first season, A Song of Ice and Fire creator George RR Martin said on his personal blog that “it will take four full seasons of 10 episodes each to do justice to A Dance with the Dragons from beginning to end” (A Dance with the Dragons is the title of the book that House of the Dragon is based on). While the number of episodes won’t be exactly what Martin envisioned, at least he has completed four seasons.
Meanwhile, Warner Bros. also showed clips from a slew of upcoming HBO and Max shows, including the next Game of Thrones spinoff, A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms, which you can watch above. You won’t be short of spinoffs either, as there’s also Aegon’s Conquest, a prequel series about Aegon Targaryen, The Nine Voyages, an animated series about Corlys Velaryon’s life before the House of the Dragon, and Ten Thousand Ships, a prequel series that will focus on Princess Nymeria, the ancestor of House Martell who founded Dorne. You really have a lot to choose from!
