Inside Out 2 has quickly become Disney’s most anticipated box office hit of the year (with Deadpool and Wolverine likely to follow next month as well). This could accelerate franchise plans around the IP, and Disney and Pixar are probably very lucky they’re already developing an Inside Out series for Disney Plus, which is set to debut next year.
Pixar’s current chief creative officer, Peter Docter, recently spoke with Entertainment Weekly (via Deadline) about the sequel, Pixar’s future plans, and what to expect from the aforementioned Disney Plus show. Surprisingly, work on the show appears to have been completed.

“We’ve done it. It’s coming out next spring. I’m not sure if there’s a specific release date,” he said. He was mum on a possible release window, which isn’t surprising since Disney typically keeps those under wraps as the executives try to come up with a strong release schedule for all of the titles under each of the company’s studios.
We’ve also previously learned some details about the show’s basic premise, but with the marketing campaign still a ways off, Docter was happy to share more details: “In the first movie, remember when we went to Dream Production to see how Riley’s dreams were formed? That partly explains why they were so strange… We continue to explore the power of dreams and how they affect our real lives. So that’s cool.” It certainly sounds like a different enough premise to make us care about this series. In other cases, made-for-TV extensions of Disney/Pixar animated hits have often felt dispensable at best.
A little over a week into its release, Inside Out 2 has already grossed over $370 million worldwide, making it the second-best debut for an animated film in the U.S. (behind Incredibles 2). It truly feels like a pre-pandemic animated blockbuster, and has already notched its best box office numbers since last year’s Barbie craze. Will Walt Disney Animation’s Moana 2 come close to that level of success when it opens later this year?
