Pentiment in the test video: One of the best games of the year is a real work of art
The voices of the testers
IGN, the largest gaming website in the world, gives it a straight 100 and the predicate Masterpiece
(masterpiece). Tester Leana Hafer is particularly impressed by the graphics and story:
It’s been a long time since I was so captivated by an adventure game as simple as Pentiment. A gripping, fast-paced detective thriller set in late medieval Bavaria. Inspired by colorful manuscripts from the period, the picture-perfect style is captivating.
While the gameplay essentially consists of searching for clues, questioning the citizens and trying to draw your own conclusions from the evidence found, this minimalist approach fits perfectly with the rich and complex story that Pentiment tells. (…)
For tester Annika Bavendiek from our sister site GamePro, the medieval Bavaria setting is a particular strength – and she also recommends who the game is worthwhile for:
For me, who now feels at home in Bavaria, the setting of Pentiment was particularly appealing. Ultimately, however, I couldn’t get enough of the book illumination style, although I had expected it to be oversaturated at some point. That, combined with far-reaching decisions and enough drama in the criminal cases, made Pentiment an adventure that hit my nerve and even taught me something.
So if you like exciting criminal cases and don’t let yourself be put off by the many dialogues and the idiosyncratic, but in our opinion very coherent style, I can only recommend Pentiment to you. Especially if you have a Game Pass subscription. Pentiment can then be played on Xbox and PC at no additional cost. And the historical adventure also runs on the Steam Deck, as this test shows.
The French colleagues from JeuxVideo give one of the lowest ratings in the test field. The weaknesses they identify are the narrative style and a weakening final act. Tester Tiraxa writes:
With its book illumination-like aesthetic and its unrelenting authenticity, Pentiment is a dazzling homage to the Renaissance age. You can also treat yourself to some pretty fascinating crime scenes, a handful of funny scenes and above all a successful time structure and decisions that really count. It’s just a pity that his sometimes tough narrative style and a somewhat tough last act represent so many stumbling blocks.
