Maybe we can actually hope for a Part 3 for The Last of Us. The emphasis is on “Maybe.”
The Last of Us 3 Or rather, confirmation that it is actually coming is still a long time coming. In the past few months there have been repeated speculations or alleged indications of this, but there is no 100% certainty.
But now there is the most promising update in a long time – even from Neil Druckmann (i.e. the creative director and co-president of Naughty Dog) himself. What exactly is it about? According to Druckmann, there is actually something like a concept for The Last of Us 3.
At least there is an idea
In the new documentary about the origins of Part 2which was published on February 2, 2024, Druckmann suggests that there might be another story to tell:
If we never get around to it, has [The Last of Us] already a good ending. The last bite on the apple – the story is over. The great thing about working at Naughty Dog is that we [die Reihe nicht fortsetzen müssen.] We would love to develop a new The Last of Us, but if you [Entwickler] If you’re passionate about something else, then we’ll support it. We have an absolutely privileged position that I don’t take for granted. […]
I’ve thought about this a lot: Any idea?
I haven’t been able to grab it for several years. But that has only recently changed: There is no story yet, but I have a concept. And in my opinion that is just as exciting as parts 1 and 2. It is a completely separate thing and there is a common thread that connects all three games. So it feels like there’s probably another chapter to this story to tell.
What does this mean specifically for Part 3?
Of course, this is not an official confirmation of The Last of Us: Part 3! However, it is anything but unreasonable that Naughty Dog will continue the game series sooner or later.
The Last of Us is (along with Uncharted) the flagship of Naughty Dog, achieved absolute top ratings, is a great financial success and was even successfully filmed as an excellent HBO series. At the beginning of 2023, Druckmann emphasized in an interview with Buzzfeedwanting to continue The Last of Us only with a story that… worth telling

The Last of Us: The game and the TV series in direct comparison
This could take some time: If The Last of Us: Part 3 actually becomes a reality, a release is probably still a long way off. If the game were at least in the concept phase at the moment, there would still be a long way to go before publication. For example, there was a gap of seven years between Part 1 and Part 2 of The Last of Us.
What’s happening at Naughty Dog right now? By the way, the studio is currently working on a new, large project, but what exactly it is is currently unknown – you can find out more about it with our colleagues at GamePro. The series was originally supposed to have a multiplayer spin-off, but the plug was pulled in December 2023.
Most recently, The Last of Us: Part 2 Remastered, a revised version of the second part, was released exclusively for Playstation 5.
