The Last of Us is currently on everyone’s lips, but not because of the video games, but because of the series adaptation of HBO, which hit like a bomb. In this context, however, an interesting game detail has now also become known: Naughty Dog almost developed a prequel about Ellie’s mother.
The first season of the HBO series The Last of Us is over and has received excellent reviews. To mark the end of Season 1, Neil Druckmann, co-president of Naughty Dog and at the same time producer of the TV series, has now also announced himself via Kinda Funny
The topic popped up when Druckmann commented on the series’ brief flashback scene featuring Ellie’s mother, Anna. Discussing this scene, he affirmed, “There was a complete version of this storyl ine that went even further back in time; that should have been made into a video game.”
According to this, Naughty Dog once planned a spin-off in which you would probably have played as Ellie’s mother, but that prequel was never finally developed. If it had really been completely implemented, Naughty Dog would not have been entrusted with it, but an external developer studio, Druckmann continues. Naughty Dog himself would have “talked about doing this for quite a while” but in the end “it didn’t quite work out”.
Druckmann went into the whole thing in an interview Variety said: “There were already some finished things written for mother and father [von Ellie, Anm. d. Red.] when we spoke to this other game studio to make a full game around Anna. The highlight of it was this scene [die in der Serie zu sehen ist].”
Druckmann did not reveal which studio was involved, nor why the implementation failed in the end.
